No Elizabeth Smart says she was raped daily

Elizabeth Smart testified she was raped repeatedly each day after she was abducted from her bedroom seven years ago and told she would be killed if she yelled or tried to escape. She described Brian David Mitchell, her alleged kidnapper, as "evil, wicked, manipulative, stinky, slimy, selfish, not spiritual, not religious, not close to God."

Dude, it was a joke. Some people like their humor dark, some prefer Family Circus.

Fine, would you prefer a recreational outrage post where I scream at the inhumanity of man and how hopefully that guy who did that will end up in jail getting the old in out in out?

Dude. Implying that two women who were invovled in horrid rape and abuse cases are lying in order to get more sympathy than the other isn't funny. It's disrespectful and sad.

You do realize that Elizabeth Smart was testifying in court, and not recounting her "experience" in some tabloid for sympathy or one-up-manship, do you not?

I'd like to point out that there's an awful lot of middle ground between Family Circus and joking about abduction, abuse and rape.

Yeah, it was a JOKE. I'm not saying that she was just doing it for sympathy--I just thought it was funny considering that we just had the Jaycee Duggard thing in the news lately.

Okay, how about this. Down with patriarchy. Rapists suck. Down with this sort of thing!

Dude - first of all, I'm not a "dude". Secondly, I am gobsmacked and saddened for you that you find humor in either situation. Thirdly, calling Ms. Smart "Liz" is disrespectful. And lastly - it is absolutely despicable to even suggest that these two young women are vying for some sort of title.

The jokes keep on coming, yet they're still not funny.

By implying that they are contesting with one another, you imply that they are sharing their stories for some personal gain and that they are lying.

That's just sad.

It's like the kind of joke one of those "edgy" dude-bro Tucker Max idots would make and then defend with "it's just a joke!"

There, that right there. The whole indignation thing, Dude, lighten up. As if it is the fault of the person who has called the "joke-teller" out for not having a sense of humor.

Yeah, but I'm not saying that they actually are doing that--that's what makes it a joke. If I genuinely thought that they were vying, I'd have said so.

And since when is Liz for Elizabeth disrespectful?

You telling them that it's not a contest implies that it is, in their minds, a contest.

ETA: And, by the way, you having to explain the "joke" afterwards means it's not really funny.

Did Elizabeth ask you to call her that? Because every article that I've read about her refers to "Elizabeth". So her name, then, is "Elizabeth". Not Liz, Beth, Bethy, Lizzie, Liza. Unless, of course, she's invited you to call her something else.

*BOLDING MINE*

IMO ~ It takes a very sick, disgusting individual to find anything funny in what these two women went through at very young ages. There is nothing at all funny or entertaining about any of this. It is not funny as in "ha-ha" or as in "weird". It is horrifying.

I think this may be the first time that you and I agree on something. And, IMHO, that says alot about the remarks in question.

And some people prefer humor that actually has at least a minimal element of funniness to it.

I agree with you. However, I think some of the 'dark humor' jokes come from the situations being so horrible that there is really nothing to say but the equivalent of 'oh, that's horrible.' The reaction is kind of liking laughing at a loved one's funeral - some sort of emotional release is needed, and through Snopes at least, neither tears nor rage can be adequately expressed.
