Cheer Our struggles with Alyssa are paying off

Normally I would put this in Unhijackable but as many of you wonderful Snopesters who've been with us through our struggles with Alyssa will probably agree, this deserves it's own thread.

At the end of last year we decided to start having testing done to see if she was bipolar. She isn't but she has emotional and maturity handicaps. Also some learning disabilities amongst a shopping list of other issues including ADHD. She CANNOT comprehend a list of more than 2-3 items without losing track of what she's doing. More than 3 items is just as impossible for her as demanding a male give birth.

Well, she was faced with staying back in 6th grade unless she completed summer classes. Not only did she, but she did very well. We took some of the methods we used for summer school and implemented them this school year.

We got her progress report today and she brought home 2 C's, a B, 2 A- and an A! She's normally a D/F student with an occasional C mixed in.

I am so proud of her!

And to continue this wonderful story, we are learning to work with her disabilities and she is helping more, we aren't butting heads as often, and she's just all-around much more pleasant.

She's just so proud right now!

She can be very stubborn about doing things so it can get very tense. Best example to give an idea how she can be if she doesn't want to do something: She knocked some stuff down and when ultimately given a choice between picking up the few papers and standing in time-out until Daddy got home in 4 hours, she chose time-out. (No, that's not how I ended up handling things but it's a perfect example.) She's been like this since she was a toddler.

It's been a long, hard road for all of us.

HOORAY! That is wonderful news. I'm proud of her and you guys. It takes a lot of work to stay that focused to help your child. Awesome.

It's great to have answers, isn't it? I'm glad that you're making progress. It makes me feel so much better to hear stories like yours when I am faced with labeling a kiddo, and drives home that there's a reason we do, and that it's really a good thing (when it's the right diagnosis).

While the tension is far from gone, it's a LOT less!

That's exactly how my daughter was until she was about 8. Thankfully, she got over that. Frustrating!!!

I'm so glad you guys are finding strategies that work and that Alyssa is making progress! How exciting it must be to see her so proud of herself! That's just wonderful.

This is such a big deal for her that I have a feeling it's going to go a long ways towards her continuing to at least try hard.

Congratulations to Alyssa and her parents and teachers! I can sympathize, as all three of my kids either are or were on IEP's. One thing I like about our K-8 school is they don't do grades. Instead they have a portfolio presentation, during parent-teacher conferences. The kids present the work they've been doing and discuss their strengths and challenges. It really takes some pressure off not having to worry about letter grades. Of couse, they do have to enter the "real world" eventually!

Congratulations to all and deep empathy for the feeling of struggling through a long process to get the best result for your child. Being able to put down some of that worry and work is just lovely - for everyone.

Thanks again everyone! It's taken the whole family to get this far. Since the first week of school is so busy, we sat down with everyone at the school who would be involved with her and discussed her diagnoses, what she would need done differently than other kids (within reason), how to handle certain situations should they arise, and anything else they thought of.

We have kept Alyssa in the loop the whole time but chose not to have her at the meeting. Why start off the year with a missed class (we only had 2 of the 4 teachers there but they would update the others). She was told exactly what would take place and we went over everything with her before the meeting and after she got home.

Even last night when she was being belligerent and started acting like she usually does before stonewalling, she still did what was asked of her. That never happens!
