Icon07 Dozens dead as tsunami slams into Samoan islands

A huge emergency effort is under way in the Samoan islands after tsunami waves triggered by an 8.0 earthquake left scores dead and flattened or submerged entire villages.

At least 111 people are confirmed killed in Samoa, neighboring American Samoa and Tonga. Officials in the Pacific region have expressed fears the toll will rise as rescue workers struggle to reach outlying villages.

My big overlord agency's office on American Somoa was destroyed (all employees were safe, thankfully). The Commish emailed pictures of the office afterward. There was a car in the office. The office was on the 2nd floor of the building. The place was completely destroyed.

What an awful thing they must be going through.

Not to minimise the tragedy of the disaster in Samoa, but...

The first I heard of it was in the gas station, paying for my fuel, I heard the radio announcer issuing a Tsunami warning for our area, specifically mentioning our part of the coastline.

The few minutes it took me to get back to the car and tune the radio to find out what and why were pretty hairy!
Luckily, it was pretty much a no-show here, but it did give us pause.

I still prefer the expected Tsunami that doesn't arrive to the unexpected on that does.
