Default iPhone acting up

For about the past 2 weeks my iPhone will periodically not send or receive text messages or phone calls. Usually when this is happening I can't access the internet either, but I think there have been some times where I have been able to use the internet. There's no warning when the phone goes into "useless" mode. The first time this happened was 2 weeks ago while I was at the hair salon. I couldn't do anything on the phone and I figured maybe it was because the building had a weird roof or something. It was at this moment that I realized I didn't even know how to turn the phone off because I had never had to do it before (I have since learned how). It seems like after I turn it off and then on again it works fine. This is really annoying because I don't know from day to day if I'm just not getting any calls or if my phone isn't relaying them to me. The signal bars remain full when it's malfunctioning.

A few weeks before this problem started I got a new case for my phone, but it's just silicone (?) and I don't think it should affect reception. I'm trying to figure it out on my own before going to at AT&T store because talking to someone at the AT&T store always results in huge problems (like them acidentally turning off my brother's phone halfway across the country because the clerk was too busy chatting with me about Facebook to pay attention to what she was doing). It's the newest model of iPhone, anyone else had a similar issue?
