In a game last month, Shane Victorino of the Philadelphia Phillies was standing in centerfield when the home-plate umpire reared up and gave him the hook. Apparently, Mr. Victorino had made one too many gestures of disapproval at the umpire's ball-and-strike calls.
But the truth is that these kinds of altercations — the ones that end with an umpire tossing a player out of a game — have become so infrequent they're verging on extinction. It's as if modern players have traded steroids and amphetamines for bubble baths and herbal tea.
