Have you all seen this? This is AMAZING:
(no, no screamers. She really is a sand artist. She was on Ukraine's Got Talent. Light box, sand, and her hands. I cannot understand a lick of the language, but it looks like she's telling a story of love, marriage, death, etc.. the audience was in tears. )

Thank you for posting that!
I can shed some light on the language (Russian) and some of the drawings that might be unfamiliar. In the beginnging, when a couple is on a date, there is a sudden dramatic news flash style radio announcement about the start of WWII. A war-time song starts to play, the lyrics are (summarized) "A dark, dark night, only the wind howls in the clouds... My beloved is asleep, and I see a tear rolling down your cheek" After the woman (presumably, the one from the interrupted date/marriage) receives a letter and gets older and older, we see a typical Soviet memorial to the fallen soldiers. In the background there is a well-known Russian song abot the fallen soldiers who do not go into the ground, but turn into white cranes who fly above and talk to us, and that is why we often get silent looking at the sky. At teh end, when we see the woman, the sailor and the baby, she writes "You are always beside me 1945" It's was beautiful and very touching.

Absolutely amazing. I almost cried. I probably would have completely lost it if I knew the language and any of the history behind it. It might be based off of a well known story or legend in the Ukraine.
And Apocalyptica also is used around the 3:25 mark but I didn't recognize the song. Last edited by Insensible Crier; 27 September 2009 at 12:39 AM. |

It's not based on any particular story that I am aware of (and I lived in Ukraine for more than half of my life), but it's a very touching tribute to those lost in WWII.

The fact that the story was told so well that I didn't need to know the translation was amazing.

Here's another by the same artist that she did on the final episode. I don't think it's as powerful as the first one but it is still very good.
BTW, in case you were wondering, she won. |
