Default Father who was called for a lift at 1am kills his daughter in 110mph crash

Quote:
A father was jailed yesterday for killing his daughter in a crash after driving at terrifying speed to teach her a lesson for asking for a late-night lift home.

Edward Goddard, 41, sped at up to 110mph to scare daughter Kaylee, 20, when she rang after midnight asking for a lift home from a nightclub.

Goddard pretended to drive into concrete bollards during the five-mile drive but clipped one of them and his Ford Scorpio flipped over.

I guess she learned her lesson - she'll never ask for a ride again.

Serious, what an asshole. I cannot describe how despicable this guy is.

I agree with that statement, but this situation goes beyond stupidity to, if not malice, an outright disregard for the feelings and life of this young woman. Anyone who thinks driving toward billboards (ETA: not billboards, bollards) at 110mph is a good way to "teach her a lesson" has at very very least a sadistic streak and is not merely stupid.

Sadly sounds a little bit too much like a colleague. I don't think he'd show off, but he drives at terrifying speeds late at night (it tended to be when dropping his daughter back at her mother's house). Any time we lift-share for a departmental meal/outing, I make sure I'm the one doing the driving. He's cleaned up his act somewhat - he also used to drive after drinking several pints of Guinness.

I thought it was bollards, not billboards.

Also, he should have made his daughter wear a seatbelt. It's the law - driver and passengers (front or back seats) must wear seatbelts.

OK, I am messing up threads with malapropisms left and right today. What's a bollard? Like a concrete construction barrier?

Anyway, my point stands.

It is his stupidity and recklessness that cause me to hold him in such contempt. A young person died because he felt a need to "teach her a lesson."

Whether his actions were driven from stupidity or malice does not change the fact that a young girl, one whose well-being he was responsible for, no less, died because of his disregard for the law, his own safety, her safety, and the safety of anyone unfortunate enough to be sharing the road with him.

whatever his motives, he is still a douchebag.

This caught my eye

Quote:
Kaylee - who was not wearing a seatbelt - received 'catastrophic' head injuries when she was hurled from the passenger seat.
Which could have dramatically affected the outcome. My car isn't going to go anywhere unless you, dear passenger do your belt up.

Apart from that, it is reckless bloody stupidity. I have words for this fool but not ones allowed on this board.

The drive was only 5 miles each way, and you aren't going to shave much off that journey time by driving it at nearly twice the speed limit.

Clearly he wanted to show her he was hacked off, but a big old shout up would have been a better (if not ideal) option. Has the guy been watching "The Carey Treatment" too many times?

A bollard is a short vertical post. Originally it only meant a post used on a quay for mooring. The word now also describes a variety of structures to control or direct road traffic, such as posts arranged in a line to obstruct the passage of motor vehicles.

It is like a row of metal poles, about waist high, to prevent cars from crossing into pedestrian areas.

The father was being a bit of a bully. From his point of view he had to drag himself out of bed and go pick up his drunk kid, which probably made him fairly annoyed as well. So he did a very immature thing.

I doubt anyone on this thread can kick him as hard as he is kicking himself now.

A bollard is a vertical post in the road.

A couple of examples. curtesy of the free encyclopedia that can be edited by anyone.

A bit of a bully? Immature? Annoyed? I think you're giving him way too easy of a time.

We are talking about a man who, when his daughter behaved in a manner he didn't approve of, but did the right thing in the end, wanted to teach her a lesson by means of fear, which is intended to produce proper submission from the object of the lesson.
It's disgusting, boorish, heartless, cruel, and indifferent to the lives of not only those two young people but to other people on the road.

Vanishing

So my question is - exactly what lesson was he trying to teach her? (I can give some facetious answers.) She already showed responsibility by traveling with companions and having a ride lined up. When that didn't pan out, she called someone she trusted instead of trying to hitch. Surely an example of youth run amok.

He wasn't trying to teach her a lesson as far as I can make out. He was completely pissed off and out of control for some reason and he wanted to show his daughter. Not to justify it in any way, but you know (or maybe you don't) when you get so angry you smash your fist into the wall? This was that taken to extreme and tragic consequences.

That is not an excuse but an explanation.

Was she drunk? The article doesn't say so.

I'm with you on this Ryda. His daughter did absolutely the right thing by calling for assistance when her ride didn't pan out.

I remember my own parents telling me very clearly that if I was ever in a situation that I needed a ride home to call them no matter the hour. If it was a case of me drinking, call anyway and we'd worry about that later. Their priority was getting me home safely and making sure I knew that I could trust them to be there for me when I needed them.

This guy was just a complete douche. On reading the headline, I assumed he'd been drinking himself, but no! He was just having a temper tantrum. So much for trusting your parents to support you when you make smart decisions!

Agreed.

Incidentally, I would never have called my dad for a lift after he'd gone to bed (and even before I'd probably have been walking). I remember once being at a party about 4 miles from home, and it was getting later and later as my designated driver refused to leave. Then he decided that he was just going to crash there. I ended up walking home and not getting there until close to 3 in the morning. Got grounded for that one.
