Icon24 Sugar makes Dr Pepper special from Dublin, Texas

Tens of thousands of people trek to tiny Dublin in north central Texas each year to buy cases of the nation's third most popular soft drink from a bottling company that uses real sugar in its flagship product. No high fructose corn syrup in sight.

I used to buy it in Fort Worth, from Central Market. You don't necessarily have to go to Dublin. It does taste different. I hate Dr. Pepper's usual taste, but I sort of like the sugar version. I bought it for my mother as a present, though--she's the Dr. Pepper fiend in the family.

I grew up in the trade are for dublin Dr Pepper. While it is good, to me it is really nothing special. Also it really needs to be ice cold, otherwise it is too sweet.

It is better than regular Dr. Pepper. But then I don't like regular Dr. Pepper so maybe I'm not the best judge. I have noticed that sodas made with real sugar seem less overly sweet tasting and more "sugary" tasting, if that makes any sense. I count my blessings that I can get Mexican Coke at my grocery store. I think it's a great improvement but it's not cheap.

My family has long stockpiled the Kosher for Passover Coca Cola... The taste difference isn't huge, but if you drink the real sugar version for long enough the corn syrup mixture is definitely less appealing.

Do you know if the Kosher version is different from the Mexican version?

Technically all coca-cola classic is Kosher... do you know if the Mexican bottles are labeled as Kosher? If they are then I doubt there is any difference between the two.

The reason that the Passover version has sugar instead of corn syrup is because of the prohibition on eating leavened bread or derivatives (chametz) during Passover... Corn is considered chametz but sugar is a-ok. I don't know if they change the recipe in any other way for the Passover version though.

I honestly don't know. I'll check the next time I go grocery shopping.

The things you learn on this board.

Referring to the "plastic vs can" thread, my vote was for the glass bottle. Coke in glass bottles is delicious. They have some lemon lime type stuff and Pepsi as well. Which brings me to this inquiry: Can the type of sugar actually have any effect on the packaging thus altering taste?

I'm very intrigued that it seems we in the UK get a better deal on these famous drinks than their country of origin. AFAIK, all Coca-Cola and Dr Pepper (also produced by the Coca-Cola Company over here, btw) in the UK uses real sugar.

Is it possible that my inability to distinguish Mexican Coke from American is because I have an oversensitive nose?

Or have I taken too much 'H' to be able to distinguish coke varietals?

Same in Canada. Going to the US and having one of their pop's is awful.

I wouldn't say so. It's easy for me to do a direct comparison because Mexican Coca-Cola (made with sugar) is readily available here, and I much prefer the U.S. version. Mexican Coca-Cola has much less "bite" to it -- I suspect there are regional differences in the formula beyond the mere substitution of HFCS for sugar.

Not exactly, because you guys use beet sugar right? Dr. Pepper with sugar uses cane sugar. (pick, pick, pick, pick)
