Default Census Worker Hanged: Bill Sparkman Found with "Fed" on Body

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/0..._n_297114.html

The FBI is investigating the hanging death of a U.S. Census worker near a Kentucky cemetery, and a law enforcement official told The Associated Press the word 'fed" was scrawled on the dead man's chest.

When you open that article it does a twitter search on the topic of "census worker". From reading the tweets it's apparently that there are people in the US who are anti-census? Why is this? I think here, some people will be apathetic about the census but there isn't really much controversy about it. What is the significance of "Fed" in this context?

As far as I'm concerned, all the Radical-Right fearmongers who have been whipping the separatist idiots into a froth are going to have to answer to this. At least they would if they were Dems. IOKIYAR.

It could just be people that don't like census takers. There are lots of people that don't want anyone from any government agency snooping around...like those conducting illegal activities.

That's a perfect reason for hanging someone, if that is what happened here.

A census taker tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.

Actually I can't think of even a good reason, let alone a perfect reason, for hanging someone. I was just responding to Mateus immediately jumping to "Radical-Right fearmongers" being to blame for this.

Who ever did this, for what ever reason, needs to be caught and punished to the full extent possible.

I love this movie! I have some friends that won't even watch it because it freaks them out so badly.

I think AnglRdr was getting at "typical, understandable, no one else put them up to it" reasons. People are killed all the time because they stumble across things other people didn't want them to know about. People are not usually killed simply for being a federal employee.

I think that a person would have a good reason to be paranoid about a 2010 census worker showing up on his doorstep in 2009.

Ah, okay. I'm sick and I don't think I'm comprehending things as I should. My head feels all stuffy and achey. Maybe I shouldn't post until I feel better.

I wasn't making any judgements on why this guy was killed, just stating that people are not normally killed simply for being a federal employee. And I stand by that. Most people are murdered because of their relationship to crime, not employment opportunities.
As to the OP, it's possible he was killed for being a census worker and "FED" was a political statement. It could be "FED" was a red herring. We really don't know. I have no problem believing either scenario, though.

From an article linked at TPM
Quote:
Kelsee Brown, a waitress at Huddle House, a 24-hour chain restaurant in Manchester, when asked about the death, said she thinks the government sometimes has the wrong priorities.

"Sometimes I think the government should stick their nose out of people's business and stick their nose in their business at the same time. They care too much about the wrong things," she said.
I don't know how familiar Ms Brown is with this case, but it does lend credence to WildRedhead's assertion.

One only needs to listen to Rocky Top to learn how "feds" are viewed in some parts of the world by those involved in certain occupational fields.

I don't get the fear of the census. My sister (decline to state, BTW), refused in the last one to fill out the forms. They came to her house - she wouldn't answer the door. I don't get it.

We'll have fun this year since I'm on the census committee. I know when she's home....

Well, I for one don't want the government to make me a statistic.

Or something like that.

Yeah, because the census in 'merica has nothing to do with representation, or nothin' like that.

Taxation without representation? Why, someone ought to have a tea party!

Does she listen to Michelle Bachmann?

Quote:
Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., says Americans should refuse to comply with the Obama administration’s 2010 census because the data could be used for nefarious purposes, including the imprisonment of Americans in internment camps.

Appearing on Fox News, Bachmann said it was the census that allowed the internment of the Japanese during World War II. She also boasted about breaking the law in refusing to complete the census form she received.

“If we look at American history -- between 1942 and 1947 -- the data that was collected by the Census Bureau was handed over to the FBI and other organizations at the request of President Roosevelt,” Bachmann said.

Ok... what about every those other census that was not used for internment camps? And who the hell would we be interning right now? (Ok, ok maybe Arab Americans shouldn't cooperate.) And is there any proof that the census was used to find out who should be interned? Also, does the census even really care about individual names and addresses?
