US embassy threat 'under control':

The US embassy and other American government offices in South Africa were closed on Tuesday due to an undisclosed security threat which police said was under control.

Bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 killed 224 people and wounded thousands.

A State Department spokesperson in Washington said the US government was warning American citizens to be extra vigilant while near US government facilities in South Africa.

I live quite close to the Consulate here in Cape Town, and as you can imagine there's a fair degree of concern about what's going on, particularly since there's a school adjacent to the consulate grounds.

I'd also like to mention this wonderful quote from our National Police Commissioner:

"There are things that have happened. There are things that are happening," he said, adding that police were in touch with US officials.

Well, indeed.
