Default Halloween costumes

*It's not too early if you're making your own.

Miss Mia keeps changing her mind about what she wants, but so far our favorite of all her ideas, and the one we hope sticks just because of the hilarity of it, is "Flying oven. With muffins."

I've got some boxes I'm going to play around with next weekend and see how it works.

Her sister is much more boring. She wants to be a cat. I hope she comes up with a more adventurous idea soon!

So, who else is making costumes? What are you/your kids going as?

And how the NFBSK do I make a "flying oven with muffins" costume?!

I totally stole this from a photo I saw on another website, but I'm going as Rosie the Riveter. I'll write "We Can Do It" on my bicep. It's simple, I don't have to buy a whole costume (maybe just a red handkerchief for my hair), and iconic and recognizable.

If I'm not teaching, I dress up to hand out treats to the kids while DH takes DD out trick or treating. My plan this year is to dress up as a Dr. Horrible Groupie.

DD has not decided what she wants to be yet - she tends to go for scary/goth/evil costumes.

DD is going to be Skippyjon Jones. She has a cardboard mask she got at a special Skippyjon Jones brunch. I figure a cream colored sweatsuit, and brown mittens and socks over her shoes. She also wants a green cape for El Skippito. The challenge is finding a plain cream colored sweatsuit...

I'm going to be Carrie: white dress dyed with food dye, red face paint on all visible skin. I was originally trying to think of something that would involve the dress from when I was a bridesmaid last year, but I think this would probably mes it up a bit too much, so I'm going to go charity hop-trawling for a dyeable dress.

SO wants to be Jonathan Preest from Franklyn; he's got a coat, but I suspect I'm going to be roped in to make the mask.

I love Hallowe'en, so we try to do something every year, but most of my friends don't get into the spirit as much as I do, so SO and I are usually the only ones dressed up. I don't let that deter me, though, and he doesn't like to let me down Hopefully someone else will put in some effort at the party this year.

No ideas for us, but we're likely turning Snacky the chihuahua into an Atomic Dog. Pics to follow if we do it.

I've been wondering about starting a thread on crafting for Christmas but thought I might get lynched.

You might have better luck finding a cream colored turtleneck & leggings than a sweatset. Just a thought.

DIY has a logical excuse. It's the ready to go retail end of things that has lost its freaking mind.

DD has decided on this princess dress for Halloween. The style that's done in pink in that pic, but we are doing it in a light purple nearly the color of the other dress.

Actually, when we went into the store, she had no idea what she wanted to be for Halloween. I think she went with princess mostly because she fell in love with this dress. Oh well, should be fun to make! Here's hoping I don't screw it up. I'm more nervous about this one then any other I've made and I'm not sure why.

I mentioned this in the parenting thread, but my 3yo wants to be a "mermaid ghost".

I figure two options.

Fish tail on bottom, sheet on top.
fish tail on bottom, zombie makeup on top

Little_Aud wanted to be a mermaid. Then she said something about wanting to be a ballerina. Click. This solved the problem of mermaid costumes hobbling little girls. I've made a skirt out of blue tulle stuffed with white tulle with little fish beads sew to it. The top is sort of a jacket with tails for the mermaid part. This fabric is pink cotton batik with a scale like pattern to it. The sleeves are netted fuzzy yarn almost the same color as the jacket fabric. The jacket is done except for the collar and tail. The netting is finished but needs to be attached (with pearls). My original sketch had a tiara like thing which I'm still not sure of. I wish I could find shell shaped buttons and sturdy shoes that look ballerina-esque.

If I have any oomph left after this I'll make the baby a starfish costume.

I've always wanted to dress up for Halloween but everthing I want to do I can't because of my weight. Any ideas? (and for the love of god don't suggest Henry VIII)

Flying muffins: Make muffin-like shapes out of styrofoam, you could just glue halved styrofoam balls into muffin cups (the paper kind). Paint the balls tan with blue dots for blueberries.

Use floral wire or wire coat hangers, push them through the muffin cup (through a punched hole in the bottom of the cup) and into the styrofoam. Then straighten the wires and attach them into the box coming out from several places.

Eta: they should move a bit and seem like they're flying.

Having recently pulled the PS2 and my favorite games out of storage, I'm considering going as Okami Amaterasu.

I love Halloween, but we're always struggling to come up with things to do. We have no front door, so we can't decorate and give out treats, and we rarely know anyone who's having a party or bothering to celebrate. Last year, we carved pumpkins and went on a ghost tour, but even the pumpkins seemed wasted, since no one can see them from our apartment. Bleh, being an adult blows.

I was thinking of making a costume in case we're allowed to dress up at work that night. I'll have to start thinking about it. And just maybe we'll find a party somewhere and get smashed while looking silly.

Is the oven flying? My first mental image was of an oven with big wings on it. (Like that flying toaster screensaver!) You could used real-ish muffins in the front portion of a box painted like an oven, or even just paint the muffins, as well. Though the flying muffins do sound pretty cool, too.

I'm being lazy this year and going with our anime convention costumes for Kivrin and me. Hmmm, maybe I can persuade Steve back into the hippie costume he used for the theme party this weekend, he looked pretty good!

DD is going as Little Red Riding Hood. My mom is putting together a little cape out of red pinwhale courdoroy, and I'll put it over a pretty little fall dress. I've got the perfect little basket for her to carry, too. This is especially good since we have a big boxer who can be her "wolf".

2 is too young to trick-or-treat, so I'm not completely sure where she will wear it, but she's going to be cute!

I have to draw my eyebrows in every morning -- they're partially missing, due to hypothyroidism, and what's left of them is gray and doesn't show against my skin. While drawing them in one day, I noticed that what's left of them angles up from the inner corners of my eyes rather like a Vulcan eyebrow. Then I remembered that I have a homemade Star Fleet shirt, purchased at a garage sale, in my front closet. I also have a black eyeliner pencil, black knit pants, and short black boots -- and my hair is short enough to look Vulcan. All I need is a package of Loving Care & some foam pointy ears.

Hijack: My mother actually worked as a riveter during WWII! That was one of her defense-related jobs -- the other was inspecting gas masks.

We never did Halloween, because it's not a Jewish holiday, but the boychik has learned about it from his goyish friends. He has a perfect-in-every-detail miniature Army uniform that his father bought him last year, and which he wore for Purim, and which I'm sure still fits, because it was big last March. If I get some boots for him, he can wear it again. He will have just turned three, and we do not live on a street suitable for trick-or-treating, but there are always all sorts of hayrides and other Halloween activities, so maybe we'll do something like that, then take him to the houses of a few people we know. Right now, he won't know the difference between five pieces of candy, and a bagful. Unless he gets invited to a party. One parent has actually muttered something about this.

Next year will be harder.
