Default Two Men Killed in Michigan; One Was Protesting Abortion

Quote:
An anti-abortion activist was fatally shot outside a high school in Owosso, Michigan, while another man was found shot dead in a business outside town in what appears to be a related incident, authorities said.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/11/michigan.shooting/

I don't know that his abortion protesting had anything to do with him getting shot, I haven't been able to find any details about why he was shot.

Excuse me if I don't mourn that man's death, and rather say "good riddance"

But when anti-abortionists said "good riddance" when George Tiller was killed, it made them immoral?

George Tiller didn't spend hours upon hours of his life trying to block individuals from receiving health care and making threats against innocent people.

No, but the people who were opposed to him were under the impression that he was killing innocent babies. (Which, FTR, I wholeheartedly disagree with.)

What they did or didn't do is irrelevant, anyway. It's hypocritical to think that it's okay to celebrate the death of one of your rivals, while deriding your rivals for doing the exact same thing.

Regardless, you are stooping to their level by expressing a positive response to a murder.

Furthermore, you don't know exactly what this man did. He very well may not have made any threats or disruptions, but rather simply hung around with a sign and voiced his views. Either way, there's no way he deserved death.

No one's saying you have to mourn, but if I were you I'd be worried about this further stirring up the nutjobs (I know I am).

Do you support the death penalty for such offenses?

You don't know that this man did either. He was protesting in his home town of 15,000. They probably don't even have a provider. Around here people protest at the mall, they just go where the people are.

From the picture, it appears that he voted for Obama which I think would make him a miniority amongst pro-lifers.

*ETA: This article has more information about him: Slain Pro-Life Advocate Jim Pouillon Known as the Peaceful Abortion Sign Guy

The article says he was across the street from the local high school. It doesn't say anything about a clinic.

Who said I was celebrating? I said "good riddance."

I'm not throwing a party. I just am not going to be sad the bastard is gone.

I feel the same about other evil nitwits when they die.

Meh. The sooner nuts like this die off, the sooner the world will get better.

I really wish we could find a way to just confine them to their own crazy island and take away their ability to communicate with the outside.

So? Where he was doing it doesn't matter. The fact that he was doing it is more than enough.

You don't know that he was threatening anyone. And if he wasn't in front of a clinic, he wasn't directly blocking anyone's access to health care.

I understand why you feel so strongly about this, but your attitude is more likely to hurt the cause you (and I) support -- and the organization that employs you -- than to help.

Calling people murders is a threat. And voting to ban/restrict abortion is blocking access to health care.

I have to say, I'm tired to death of pussy-footing around the nutjobs. Yeah. I'm reacting to this emotionally. Even I do that sometimes.

No, it's an insult.

It's also his right as a citizen.

React emotionally all you want, but show some discretion.

Operation Rescue and Randall Terry (seperately) are calling press conferences regarding this. From what I'm reading, the vicitim had been holding dead fetus signs and shouting at people at parades every day for 10 years now. If he was really dedicated to "defending babies" couldn't he have spent those 10 years actually doing something to, you know, help living babies instead of harassing people on the street? This is something I think about it regards to most dedicated anti-abortion protestors, but even more so for this guy since he's been doing this around town for 10 years. I promise that there are better ways to help babies in Owosso/Flint than holding pictures of dead ones across from the high school.

You really don't know anything about this guy (other than that he was an anti-abortion protester). You should probably withhold such judgments until you know, rather than making assumptions and generalizations that may be false.

And again, the killing of this guy may put some extra wind in the sails of the pro-life movement, especially the extremists. And who knows, it may even lead to more retaliatory violence. Hopefully not, but we will see.
