Fight Pickles kill bacteria

Comment: I was told recently that the reason places like Panera Bread
serve a dill pickle with their sandwiches is if eaten after the sandwich
it will kill any bacteria that was ingested with the sandwich. Any truth
behind this?

Funny, I thought people served pickles with deli sandwiches because they taste good together. Damn, even my pickles now have an ulterior motive!

I doubt it, since by eating a pickle you are ingesting lactic acid bacteria.

The process of pickling does protect foods from bad microbes though, right? Besides, not all bacteriums are bad, some are your friends. Especially the ones you need in order to digest, and the ones that keep more dangerous diseases away. Bacteria can be your friends. Don't be hating on them now!

Default Hmmm...wonder if these two are connected?

I posted in the "Pickle juice is deadly" http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?t=428 thread that when I was a kid old folks always told us pickles and pickle juice were good for you when you had a stomach bug. Wonder if this is just a continuation of that old wives tale.

Most pickles are still supposed to be refrigerated after opening. Harmful bacteria, while killed or inhibited by pickling, can still grow in the pickling medium. Depending on the process, the shelf life can vary.

According to this webpageListeria monocytogenes can survive acidic environments.

That said, the comment suggested that eating pickles killed the bacteria in the other foods. I've never heard that pickles had such properties, and I haven't been able to uncover any information on it.

Turquoise Girl is a microbiologist, and is thus fond of the little blighters. (Little blighters referring to the prokaryotes, the bacteria, not pickles.)

Oh, cool. Well, I'm not a microbiologist but I do appreciate what the 'little blighters' do for us. Must be a product of growing up in a medically-based family.

I read yesterday that Linné (why do you keep calling him Linnaeus? ) was of the opinion that pickled cauliflower helped you tolerate alcohol better.

It's (mostly) how he identified himself when he published.
