Driver New Single-Seat Volkswagen

Comment: testing for reality. Please let it be!

You can go to Shanghai for a vacation, buy two or more of these cars, one for your wife and one for yourself, and one for each of your kids, have them shipped here, and still spend less money than if you bought a car in locally.

This is not a toy, not a concept car. It is a newly developed single seat car in highly aerodynamic tear-shape road-proven real car. It is ready to be launched as a single-seater for sale in Shanghai in 2010 for a mere RMB 4,000 (US$600)

Interested? Wait till you learn that it will cruise at 60-70 mph with an unbelievable 258 miles/gallon!!

Impressed? Totally, after you have read all the details below about the hi-tech and space-age material input into this car!!! It will be on sale next year!

Better than Electric Car - 258 miles/gallon: IPO 2010 in Shanghai
This is a single seated car.
From conception to production: 3 years and the company is headquartered in Hamburg , Germany , Germany .

Fuel efficiency = 258 miles/gallon
Travel distance with a full tank = 404 mile(2+gallons).

If it's made in China, why does it have a Voltswagen logo?

Because car manufacturing companies have headquarters and factories around the world and in some cases certain models are made and distributed only in specific regions. Volkswagen Group China has more than a dozen subsidiaries in (one of the oldest of which is in Shanghai).

It's a two-seater. The VW logo and license plates are (badly) 'shopped in.

Also, there is no way this thing can go for only $600.

US News & World Report had an article about it last year.

From the US News article quoted above:

Are production rumors realistic? Maybe. Multiple sources say production would be limited, and the price is not yet known.

From that article:

That sparse interior doesn't allow for many creature comforts. Autoblog notes, "Safety features like airbags, anti-lock brakes and stability control aren't lacking, but convenience items like air conditioning may be optional."
Without AC, that thing here would be a rolling hothouse!

But I love it!

The full-resolution photos in that article show that I was wrong about the VW logo and license plates being photoshopped in.

How are we defining better? Surely Electric cars don't have a figure for mpg seeing as there are no gallons going in.

I'm not quite sure why this is included as a fact as the location of the HQ is pretty irrelevant to the car's specs, however, according to the VW Group homepage, they're based in Wolfsburg, not Hamburg. I'm also unsure why the country is referred to as Germany, Germany.

What it will be selling at in China is irrelevant to what it will be priced at in the US market unless there's also a freetrade agreement being signed between the two countries sometime soon.

Okay, but if you're just going to up and admit you were wrong in the face of contrary evidence, we'll have to create a new board for you.

This probably isn't what they are talking about, but in a country where fossil fuels still provide the majority of our electrical needs, 258 mpg could very well be better than what the electric car would be giving you as an equivalent. You could also say "better" in terms of "lower energy costs", even if the electricity wasn't coming from fossil fuels.

Well, if you, your wife and your kids are driving in seperate cars to get to the same place, then your effective mpg isn;t 258 mpg, it's 258/3 = 86mpg, which is pretty good, but not astronomically good

Unfortunately, I know families that do this already with normal cars.

I want one! Especially as the license plate is "Wife of Bath."

Yow!

And here I thought motorcycles could be tricky to see. I would NOT want to be in an accident with one of those! Not in it or another car involved. I can just imagine what would be left if it was versus a semi.

Is there a motorcycle or moped that gets as much as 258 mpg? If not, I don't see how this thing, which is heavier than a motorcycle, can achieve that figure.

This vehicle has far better aerodynamics than a motorcycle.

But as has been discussed, the 258 mpg is kind of a bogus figure, since there aren't "gallons" of anything going into it.

As opposed to most passenger cars, which do just great against semis.

For some reason I hear a lot more people bringing up "safety" issues when talking about the cars that might be victimized by unsafe cars than the unsafe cars themselves. I think we'd be a lot safer if we eliminated all of the SUV's than if we eliminated all the 1 and 2 seaters.
