Default Rat emergency

My rat appears to be choking on something and is kind of..drooling yellow ooze.

I say only appears because it's been long enough that he would not have lived by now if he were truly choking.

When I put my finger near his mouth, he "grooms" it with his teeth which he's never done before.

Any ideas? Might he be naturally dying on me?

ETA: I think I found my answer, he is indeed choking but appears to be able to breathe. Since he can still breathe he will probably work it out on his own. At least according to one website I found.

I've heard about a couple of cases in Sweden where a rat has been choking on something so badly that it was unable to breathe. In both cases, careful chest/belly depressions managed to dislodge it. Of course, be careful, as rats are fragile.

That is certainly good news! I read your first post this morning, but have no working knowledge of rats, and couldn't think of any way to help. I'm glad he is OK.

He's back to his normal, dominant, feisty self.

Thanks for asking!

I think you should post a picture just to make sure he doesn't 'splode.

I don't think I have any recent pics, but here he is when he was just a wee one about a year ago.

This is Beau:

And just so my other doesn't get jealous, Lumos:

Lumos just begs to be LOL'd. (But they're both cute.)

I think Lumos has a fan club. When I was reading your post, three of my girls walked up to the screen and carefully examined his photo. There was even some licking of the screen.
