The moon landing connection means it's probably just a random lie, but I can think of one other possibility. Ben Stella would be "son of Stella," and when a healing prayer is said for someone in Judaism, they're referred to that way, by their Hebrew name, then Ben or Bat, and their mother's name. I googled around, and I couldn't find Avi Amenov's mother's name. If it's Stella, or if it's a Jewish name like Sela or Tzila, that could have morphed into the more familiar Stella in the retelling, that could explain it. Especially if the original request was sent to a Jewish mailing list-- like a synagogue list, or a private school list, it would more likely have used his Hebrew name than his secular name.
