Military No Eagle Scout has ever been convicted of a felony

Comment: Some email recently stated that no Eagle Scout has ever been
convicted of a felony. Cannot believe this is true and wondered if you had
any idea how they could make such a statement.

Judge Loudoun Judge Gives Spammer 9-Year Prison Term

Quote:
A Loudoun County judge sentenced the first person convicted of felony spam charges in the nation to nine years in prison but allowed him to remain free on bond during his appeal.

Jeremy Jaynes, 30, of the Raleigh area of North Carolina, was convicted in November of violating Virginia's anti-spam statute by illegally flooding America Online accounts with tens of thousands of bulk e-mail advertisements. The case was tried in Loudoun because the e-mails, which peddled such products as stock pickers and a computer program, ran through an AOL server in the county.

[Circuit Judge Thomas D.] acknowledged letters [written by Jaynes's friends and family members that were submitted to the court as testament to Jaynes's character] which he said described Jaynes as a former Eagle Scout who helped "the poor build houses," but he said the jury's recommended sentence reflected community sentiment about spamming and what he called its "tremendous societal costs."

Apparently this is referenced often by the con man that inspired "Catch Me If You Can."

Mr. Abagnale believes that one of the root problems of this issue is that ethics no longer has a place of high respect in this country. It’s not taught at most colleges, not considered important by most business people and not talked about at home like is has been in the past. He points out that no Eagle Scout, the highest rank of Boy Scout, has ever been convicted of a felony.

Judge Hate Writing Brings Arrest of 2 Students

Quote:
Two 18-year-old Commack High School classmates, one of them an Eagle Scout, were arraigned on charges that they painted large swastikas and hate messages on the school's athletic field on graduation day last month.

The youths, Robert A. Rolston of East Northport and Philip Argiros of Commack, pleaded not guilty to charges of criminal mischief, a felony.

Judge Robinson to retire as prosecutor

Quote:
A small statuette he received for working with the Boy Scouts reminded him of "one of the big gest disappointments of my career." It involved a youthful felony defendant. Robinson said he was devastated to learn the man he was prosecuting was an Eagle Scout.

A quick google search with "eagle scout convicted" turns up a fair number of occurances. More than enough to dispel the URL.

At http://www.nndb.com/honors/410/000041287/, scan down the "Occupation" column and there are several listed at criminals. (And a bunch listed as politicians )

At http://listserv.tcu.edu/cgi-bin/wa.e...COUTS-L&P=2269 many are listed. Should be fairly easy to confirm from other sources.

Judge Mark hofmann

Quote:
Mark William Hofmann, born Pearl Harbor Day, 7 December 1954, in Salt Lake City, Utah, became by age thirty one of the state's most notorious, complex, and successful criminals.

The second of three children and only son of William and Lucille Hofmann, Mark Hofmann was raised in Salt Lake City and in Buena Park, California. He received an Eagle Scout award, filled a mission to England for the Mormon Church, attended Utah State University in Logan, and married Doralee Olds in 1979 in the Salt Lake Temple. He fathered four children, the last as an accused murderer.

Following a five-week preliminary hearing, Hofmann was bound over for trial on thirty felonies, including two capital murders. Because he agreed to plead guilty to two counts of second degree murder and to discuss his crimes, the prosecutors agreed to dismiss the other charges, to accept a reduced sentence on the Sheets homicide, and to allow concurrent sentences. Thus, Hofmann was sentenced to serve one five-years-to-life sentence in the Utah State Penitentiary.

Remember Charles Whitman? The young man who carried a bunch of guns and ammo up into the tower on the UT campus and shot some folks, after killing his mom and his wife.

Yup, an Eagle Scout.

Of course, he was never convicted. So there.

Very few Eagle Scouts are to be found on post office walls but the exceptions are notable. Arthur Gary Biship, a serial killer; Mark William Hoffman, a forger and murderer: and Charles Whitman, the UT tower sniper, are three from this list.

The rest of them, and it's a long list, are civil rights lawyers, astronauts, authors, movie producers, doctors, politicians, judges, military heros, cartoonists, and generally a pretty impressive lot.

I know there's some unfortunate undercurrents from some factions of the homophobes but what I saw of my son's experience with the scouts was overall really positive and it was stuff I just couldn't give him. All that self sufficient and helpful, loyal, honest, etc etc etc stuff. eta well I worked on that stuff too but not while camping with a bunch of guys. Something about camping is cool. His group camped constantly.

Here's the list if you want to go by Wiki.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._of_America%29

They do have cites for all this though.
