Ponder Wish I'd thought of that

Comment: perhaps "snopes" could help prepare americans for the upcoming elections. when politicians make specific "factual" comments or accusations of opponents misconduct &/or past voting records, it would be nice to have a ''reality clearing house".

The producers hired all those birds and only ONE turned up? I'd ask for my money back, if I were the producers.

Cheap birds! You pay all for all that birdseed - and even pay the guy to sweep up the droppings - and the birds don't even bother to show up. I asks ya, where's the world heading?

Or tied a noose. If your hired emu commits suicide, do you get a refund?

D'oh!

Comment: I would like to recommend a great book which will be of great
help when researching the origins of place names in California --
"California Place Names" by Erwin G. Gudde.
Gudde mentions the "pair-o-dice" theory for the origin of the name of the
town. He suggests, as you do, that the story came after the name.
Apparently the word "paradise" was misspelled on an early map, and this
may be the origin of the legend.
Another detail mentioned by Gudde: Helltown is about 5 miles from
Paradise.

Ya Snopes, if you had used this book in the above article, you could have even added it to the "Sources" section of the web page.

That way we could just forget about urban legends and focus on missing people who may, or may not, be actually missing.
Oh wait, other websites do this nowl

There is also a book called Place Names of New Mexico by Robert Julyan, if it ever comes up.

Comment: I have heard that if there is a rumor to check with Snopes.com, and i have
been doing that. However, does this site get fact checked before material
is published. there are so many websites out there on the internet that I
don't know which sites are legit and which sites aren't. If you could
please advise I would appreciate it.

No, Barbara and Snopes just throw any old junk onto the webpages without any regard to research or verification. It's sad but true. In fact, do you that they haven't even been able to find the hanging munchkin in the Wizard of Oz?

Yeah! What if you ... um, just throwing ideas around ... ah, what if you did something like, oh, explain from where you got your information, and, I don't know, cite the sources you used in gathering information to write the material? Get on that, will ya?

From now on, I think you and Barbara should just make it all up: just a bunch of twisted, elaborate theories that you could email to all your...oh, wait.

Comment: I really think these silly stories start as a way to further prejudice
people against a particular ethnic or racial group. I just am not
convinced they are true. Unfortunately, Hispanic immigrants are the new
black people. I don't mean that to sound racist either--it is very cruel
how there is always a group du jour that people are picking on.

TV

Comment: Dear Snopes,

I love to read all the different legends but sometimes I can't stomach
reading about horror or something else I might want to. Your site is the
best and I really love it but I was hoping to convince you to make a
series of it or something like that. I'm sure that lots of others would
like to hear about the legends through the TV as well and you could get
your site out to people who don't know about Snopes.

I really do know that tons of people who like for your to make a TV show,
debunking legends and myths. It would be fun to see it too.

Well that was just a thought. Thanks for reading and hope you think about
putting a show on the air some day.
