Comment: Is this real, or is this a case of deliberate maligning of Frankston (which is a suburb of Melbourne, Australia and the butt of many a low-class joke)?

"TRUE - Frankston Tank Top!!!!

This was taken in front of the Frankston, K-Mart store, where the young lady was shopping. Look at it closely.

Now I ask you...Who stands and looks at a pair of men's briefs and says hmmmm...I can make me a nice summer top from these!! On the other hand...$6 for a three pack is a good price!! But what if they weren't bought new? That's Frankston recycling at its best. Don't throw out yer feller's drawers when the skid marks don't wash out no more. Just cut the crotch out and wear 'em."

It seems like a clever and economical sport bra to me - what's the problem?

There's a roadhouse up here halfway between Nenana and Fairbanks called Skinny Dick's. The jockey shorts tanktop has long been their marketing flagship:

But that falls under "Things about Alaska we don't usually tell people."

ETA: If you can't read the text, naturally the place is called "Skinny Dick's Halfway Inn."

I've never seen that. I mean, in high school, the track team pretty much just wore sports bras, but like, wearing a sports bra out in public to a store just seems so tacky and trashy.

To me, it looks like she's at an outdoorsy thing, festival or whatnot. I regularly take off as many clothes as possible at summer outdoorsy things.

There is no indication whatsoever she's going to the store, despite what the OP says. have you ever seen a crowd like that at a K-Mart?

I don't recommend waring this in one of those place that *still have laws regarding exposure of undergarments.

*I'm hoping all these laws have been struck down as unconstitutional by now.

I see runners dressed that way all over the place. Can't say I ever noticed anything tacky or trashy about it. Doesn't seem to draw much comment, either.

Women who jog or otherwise exercise outdoors. Women who train for marathons. Women who sunbathe in public parks. Women who do their gardening or other yard work outside on hot days. Women doing any of the above who need to run to the store for something on short notice.

During the recent Sunpocalypse here in Seattle I saw a lot of women walking around in shorts and bikini tops. It was freaking hot here.

ETA: You know, I always assumed this was a photo of a man--the back looks a lot like my Dad's, just less hairy. And missing the surgery scar. Anyway, he tans the exact same way.

It's more like a halter top than a sports bra. A sports bra is intended to serve as a bra, that is, to support one's breasts.

I don't think many women would wear a makeshift sports bra like this for running, though, simply because of the comfort factor. Sports bras as designed to support and constrain the breasts during exercise; men's briefs are not and probably wouldn't support the breasts nearly enough.

Oh, no, I wouldn't expect so, either. I was responding to the 'sports bra in public = trashy' issue, not trying to wade into the sports bra vs. halter top debate.

Well, the first sports bra was actually 2 jockstraps sewn together, so maybe this will catch on...

Hey, why the discrimination? I know of plenty of men who could use a sports bra like this to provide some lift and separation under and around their manboobs for ventilation.

While I have no problem with the briefs re-purposed as a tank top, I do think the woman in the picture really needs to put on some sunblock.

My initial reaction was that it was a man's back as well, all though I'm not really sure why. Maybe the skin?

Really? Got any references for that? It seems to me the real point of a sport bra is to use plenty of breathable material which will hug the contours, while two jockstraps would certainly not hug much of the contours, would on most women either travel around a lot and leave most of the base of the breasts out, or would do nothing that a basic bikini bra would not do better.

A basic bikini bra does nothing.

This link confirms the two-jockstraps story. Note that making a bra out of a jockstrap or two is a very different thing from trying to use jockstraps to support one's breasts. Cutting and sewing were probably involved.
