Snapping turtles

Comment: A long time ago when I was a child, my father told me to never
touch snapping turtles because they wouldn't let go until it thundered. I
never did touch one. I want to know if it's true that snapping turtles
wouldn't let go until it thundered. My opinion is, my father had an idea
they were covered in nasty diseases or salmonella or fungi and simply
didn't want his children to get sick or scaly.
