Squirrel Baby squirrel emergency!

An entire squirrel nest has fallen apart and dumped 4 baby squirrels in our yard. These little guys are still pinkies with eyes closed and no fur.

Bill has carefully scooped them up and put then in a shoebox with some of the leaves from the nest. We're taking them to the local wildlife rehab center.

I'll update when there's more to report.

Wish the little guys luck!

Give them a hot water bottle to keep them warm until you get them dropped off, or keep them close to your body.

Do you have a sign on your house that says "squirrel refuge"?

I'm glad you are trying to save the little guys, sending vibes for them to survive and grow.

It would seem so. I guess with the number of squirrels we have in our neighborhood, accidents like this are to be expected.

I have no way of knowing if they are hers or not, but since they came out of the tree where Clumsy made her nest, and they fell out of a tree like she did, I'm calling them "Clumsy's babies."

The rehabbers are working on them, but they didn't make any predictions on whether or not they can save any of them. They didn't automatically say that they were a lost cause, so I guess there's hope. The poor little things are so small, though.

If they're able to save them, they're going to release them in our yard, as they did with Friendly and Clumsy.

Keep your fingers crossed!

This would blow my grandfather's mind. He would never understand someone wanting squirrels in their yard. He absolutely hated them.

We not only want them in our yard (they're cute and fun to watch!) we feed them. Once a day or so we throw out a mixture of corn, peanuts, and sunflower seeds. We get big bags of it at the hardware store.

So far, the record is 14 squirrels in our backyard at one time.

I think they are cute, too. But boy! I hope you have aluminum siding on your house. Those squirrel teeth can really do some damage on the eaves.

We just called the wildlife rehab center to check up on the babies, and...

One cheerleader for each baby squirrel! They're all alive and "doing very well" according to the rehabber we talked to. Yay!

Wonderful news! I hope the news keeps on being positive. It makes me happy to know there are people like you out there who will take the time to help out little furry friends in peril.

We've been lucky so far, I guess. We've never had a problem with them getting into the attic or pulling down our cables or anything.

I love squirrels. Mom and dad had one in the house as a pet for a long time. They raised him from a little baby. They would give him peanuts in the shell and he would run up the curtain and hide them in the folds. When mom would close the curtain at night a shower of peanuts hit the floor.

Oh, I'm so glad the babies are doing well. I love squirrels. There's just so much personality rolled up into those tiny bodies! If squirrels could speak english they'd be such adorable little guttermouths.

When they are released, the setup will be the same, I'm sure, as when Friendly and Clumsy were released. We'll have them in a pet carrier in a cage for a few days in order for them to get acclimated to the area and the other squirrels.

And I'll be sure to get plenty of pics!

I didn't get pics when we found them, since getting them to the rehab center was priority. They all looked like this, though:

Those would be cat food in my yard! Seriously, the cats would go nuts for those helpless little things. If not my own 2 gatos, the neighbors cats or any strays.

My cats loooove squirrels, they're good eatin'! Usually all we'd find of their squirrel meal is the tail. Guess it's all hair & no meat. The only thing better is baby bunnies & chipmunks fer eatin'! I think they're both related to the Clampetts or something.

If I found them first they'd make to the wildlife rehab but I wouldn't want them back in my yard, we have more than enough.

Wow! They were brand spankin' new, weren't they? I've seen Mama squirrels fetch babies back up the tree before. Wouldn't Mama have come and got them, or was it too cold and rainy to leave them?

The lady at the rehab center said that mother squirrels don't usually go to any great lengths to rescue their babies*. It also might have taken mama too long to find them, or she might have only saved one or two of them. The entire nest was down, so there was no place for her to take them anyway. As young as they were, we figured their best hope was the rehab center.

*That being said, I've seen a youtube video of a mother squirrel taking on a dog that was after one of her babies.

Update!

The little pink squirmy things aren't pink or squirmy anymore! They're still little, though.

They've got their fur now, but are still being hand-fed. That will continue for another week or so, after which they'll be moved to the enclosure outside of the Rehab center and go on "self-feeding." All four are still alive and doing well.

They'll be ready to release in our yard in about 6 weeks or so.

Yay! I'm so glad they made it. I think it's great you rescued them and got them the help they needed.
