Icon103 Fox's Glenn Beck: President Obama is a racist

Fox News Channel commentator Glenn Beck said he believes President Barack Obama is a racist.

Beck made the statement during a guest appearance on the "Fox & Friends" morning show. He said Obama has exposed himself as a person with "a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture."

D'oh!

This one is gaining steam. I've heard it a lot over the past week. In addition to Mr. Beck here, there was a lady who called a local ring-wing radio show, and even the host thought she was nuts. Also, a letter in today's NY Post calls Obama a racist.

I mean, really people. Don't you have any better material than this? It used to be aggravating, now it's just pathetic.

But but but...racism is dead! The Republicans passed that law in 1964 over the objections of the Democrat Party and racism has been dead ever since then, except when Trent Lott got punished for being white! Obama should have known the police were just doing their civic duty and it would have all been exactly the same if it were a white guy in a leafy green suburb!

Morons.

Given that he's biracial and was largely raised by a white mother and white grandparents, it seems a bit unlikely that he'd be racist against white people. Stranger things have happened, I suppose, but it would be surprising.

He's a self-loathing half-breed muslin.

Obviously.

All I can say in response is "Glenn Beck is a racist, and has exposed a deep-seated hatred for black people - in addition to his obvious hatred for thinking."

Seriously, it also looks like the cop did act stupidly - especially after today's 911 call not matching the officers story.

I was in the Post Office today, and a total stranger, standing in line beside me, started in on "Black History Month" stamps. "What's wrong with white history?" he wanted to know. "White people should have stamps too."

Even if the cop had done absolutely everything right and was totally in the clear, Obama was responding to a surprise question about the arrest of a personal friend.... Do I think he should have just dodged the question and moved on? Yes. Is it even remotely reasonable to suggest that his poor word choice is evidence of some sort of racism? Not even a little bit.

We don't need stamps we have all the money... at least until the Obama coin comes out.

Actually, I avoided making eye contact, and murmured, "Now, now: be nice. Be nice." After a while, he stopped bugging me.

The dial on my forehead was only at "1," "Surly." If it'd been a "2" or "3" type of day, I'd've done something like that.

Silas (on a "4" kind of day, I'd have levelled the whole block...)

I'm surprised this is news now. Rush Limbaugh has been calling Obama a racist for at least 3-4 months, if not longer.

Yeah, I hate how there are never any white people on stamps. Don't even get me started on money.

Let's look deeper.

It is not considered racist to "see" color, though much of the strategies for combatting racism made (correct) points about how people are all the same, etc. To be black in America is to be a part of an ethnic group (usually) that self-identifies as such in a sometimes exclusionary way (Dave Chappelle, anyone?). Without being fully cognizant of the various nuances, there are plenty of white conservatives who see this as a form of racism. Meanwhile, there are plenty of people who see white conservatives as racist because they refuse to recognize ongoing differences (as a whole) among ethnic groups in the United States (i.e., school district disparities) and the reasons why race still (unfortunately) matters.

I won't defend Glen Beck or Rush Limbaugh and I don't share their views. But I do think what many people fail to understand about this whole "Obama is a racist!" thing is that Beck and Limbaugh speak to and for a constituency confused about how they're supposed to address the issue of race, believing the "right" thing to do, as in the "politically correct" thing to do (whether or not they actually do it themselves), is to not see color at all, ever, for any reason. Irritating though it may be to have someone protest about "Black History Month," it does more good to try to walk them through what actually is useful in seeing color, and how to do it, than to scoff at their ignorance as a form of evil.
