Not necessarily a bad thing if true. After all, Laura Bush didn't do much as first lady except encourage people to read (a neverending source of amusement for some of us in light of whom she married). If Michelle Obama is actually accomplishing things from her bully pulpit, I'm fine with her doing it on my dime, so to speak.

Comment: i recieved an email claiming that The Obama's have taken
portraits of the First Ladies off the walls of a specific room in the
White House and replaced them with "Black Art".

The letter below is supposedly from a hairdresser that works in the
Galleria Mall in Houston TX.

--------------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

Let's just say this is a story that we needed to be pass along. Feel free
to do the same. We promise you it is true.

Our hairdresser of many years works in the Galleria area. She also just
happens to cut the hair of a wife of one of our astronauts who walked on
the moon. Needless to say, this lady is in her 70's. She, along with
other astronauts and wives recently visited the White House to mark the
40th anniversary of our landing and walk on the moon. This lady has been
to the White House on several occasions. Unfortunately, it was not a good
experience.

First of all, the men and the women were separated. President Obama was
disinterested in the event and viewed it simply as a photo op. This is
the opinion of her husband (an astronaut who walked on the moon!).
Michelle Obama gave the ladies the obligatory tour of the White House,
which of course the ladies toured before on previous visits. This one
wife was especially looking forward to one historical room where the
portraits of the First Ladies hang. Upon entering the room, she was
disappointed to see the room filled with only black art and all the First
Ladies portraits were gone. She said it made her sick. She could not wait
to leave.

We actually know the name of the lady/wife, but she asked for her name not
to be repeated. However, by telling our hairdresser of her experience,
she obviously wants people to know what has happened to our White House
and our history. We hope it makes the news, somehow.

How dare she put up art she likes in the house where she is going to be living for the next 4-8 years.

Uppity, that's what that is.

If we could cope with eight years of knowing George "I don't recall any heaviness ruining my time at Yale" Bush was living there, they can deal with knowing paintings they don't like very much are going to be on the walls for a while.

No, that would be groovey art. Perhaps they mean black velvet paintings?

The seminary I attended put up these hideous abstract paintings on black canvas backgrounds all over the library about a year into my time there. That's what came to mind for me.

It would be a better rumour if the astronaut wife lady said it had become a room where Michelle Obama practiced the black arts.

$70,000--Speechwriter for First Lady
Laura Bush had this, but not Michelle Obama. Does this mean that Mrs. Obama writes her own speeches? This alone makes me more inclined to think that the money is being spent well. It's been said, but as long as her staff is productive, then fine. I haven't seen a press release on anything in particular that she is working on, but it hasn't been that long.

Black art probably means by black artists. There have been some really important African Amerian artists in US history, but I would not be at all surprised to find thatb the White House collections are lacking in them. I don't know whether the Obamas have put up pieces from a personal collection, or have decided to expand the breadth of the White House collection, or have arranged for some kind of loan of pieces from the National Gallery for a temporary display, but good for them. And I'm sure they lined the bird cage with the First Ladies' pictures. They are probably in another room or in storage.

Don't most galleries rotate displays somewhat? Not the big pieces, obviously-- the Louvre isn't going to put the Mona Lisa in storage for a few months to give the latest Andy Warhol acquisition better space-- but they rotate things in and out of places of prominence, and places like the White House, that are only secondarily galleries, and won't expand space to accomodate new acquisitions will do this. If they have portraits of members of Lincoln's family, for example, of great historical interest, but not necessarily great art, by unknown artists, they might be displayed for a week as part of a Civil War exhibit, or during Lincoln's bicentenniary year, but otherwise be in storage?

I've seen the First Ladies gallery, myself, when they were displayed at either the National Archives, or the Museum of American History, I forget which, as some exhibit on First Ladies, with a lot of the clothes they'd worn, often they're inaugeration outfits, on display. It was more interesting than I thought it would be. This was back in the 1980s, when I was in school in DC. There's also a National Portrait Gallery, which is where I thought the First Ladies portraits were kept, but then, I'm not married to someone who walked on the moon, so what do I know?

I'm sure everyone commenting knew that. For what it's worth, my comment was meant as a joke. Apparently not a good one.

Are those salaries for the last year of Bush' time in office, or the first? Admittedly, there should be some factor for inflation in the 8 years between the two inaugurations.

You told us that she's the wife of an astronaut who walked on the moon, and that she works as a hairdresser "in the Galleria area." Assuming she actually exists, your not giving her name won't protect her identity.

The room in question is most likely the Vermeil Room, and according to this July 2009 tour report "The Vermeil Room features portraits of recent First Ladies."

Was he uninterested or disinterested? Because it sounds like he was uninterested.

Yeah, I got that. I was joking about it because, really, unless you are familiar with all of the works, how could you possibly know that the artists are black?

Also, how does astronaut wife lady know that it was Michelle Obama who moved the portraits? Does she get invited to the White House during every administration?

Nitpick: the astronaut's wife is not a hairdresser. The astronaut's wife told the story to her hairdresser.

But yeah. It's a pretty small pool of people from which to choose.

According to that link, the "Room of the First Ladies" gets remodeled a lot. Also, are there any reliable links that report these same facts?

I got the impression that the hairdresser was not the astronaut's wife, but the hairdresser to the astronaut's wife; the hairdresser who is supposedly passing this along was told by the astronaut's wife and it's the hairdresser who does not want to be identified.

ETA Spanked, and much more eloquently by Simply Madeline.
