Canada Montreal Canadiens

Comment: I had recently heard that the Montreal Canadiens are called "The
Habs" after the H on their jerseys, because "hab" is short for "les
habitants", which are the original settlers of New France. But then I had
also heard that the C and H on their jerseys stood for "Club de Hockey
Canadien."

From the historical jersey section of the official Montreal Canadiens website:

http://ourhistory.canadiens.com/jers...ogos/1909-1946

The 1916-17 entry records the first appearance of the letter "H" on the jersey and says it indeed stands for "hockey".

In 1946, Charlie Hudson bought up the struggling Calgary Habitants and Halifax Canadiens franchises, moved them to Montreal, and combined them into a single team called the Canadiens (whose jerseys bore the letters CH for obvious reasons).

The new Montreal Canadiens struggled to a 8-46 record, playing most of the season shorthanded after Hudson discovered that the Halifax franchise was actually a lacrosse team.

Well, I picked up my first Montreal Canadiens $1 coin yesterday.

It looks good. H and all!
