Comment: In your college section you do not address the rumor of
"if you get hit by a car in an East Tennessee State university crosswalk you get your tuition paid for." or "if you get hit by a University of South carolina bus you get free tuition" Are these myths or true? |

I think this goes around on every campus. At my old university (Idaho) we heard the same thing. I think one of my friends asked someone, she didn't know, but said if it was true that it wouldn't be any vehicle, it would have to be a university vehicle driven by a university employee. As much as I would have liked free tuition, I wasn't about to put myself in danger (although I joked about it a lot).

One of my friends died as a result of an accident involving the college van. (It was not the fault of the driver - a truck dropped its load of manhole covers on the road.) I don't know if her college expenses were covered, but I wouldn't bet on it. I do know that the college was going to deny her a diploma, even though the death occurred in her junior year and she had been accepted to a graduate school. She was finally granted a diploma after outrage by the student body.

So then ... if you get hit by a car and then your room mate commits suicide, they'd just hand you a degree free of charge, right?

Well, I assume the college's insurance would have to pay you some sort of settlement, which could presumably cover tuition, but I don't assume that up in the Financial Aid office they have the "Tuition Remission-Hit by Campus Vehicle" form.
