Icon19 Freud on weapons

Comment: Several websites attribute the following quote to Sigmund Freud:

"A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity".

A quick google search on this quote brings back countless hits. Some
claim that it is from his work "General Introduction to Psychoanalysis",
but others claim that that the quote is not his. Who is correct?

Sounds to me like something someone attributed to Freud, not something he might have really said. It's probably a parody of Freud, since he often wrote and theorized about "sexual retardation."

I think a fear of weapons is no such thing. If someone points a gun at me I'm going to crap myself - I don't think that says anything about my sexual and emotional maturity.

If it's a fear of handling weapons, then, who knows. It does just sound like someone parodying Freud using the double-entendre of 'weapon'. Freud of course did make much of double entendres, he does go on about the word 'box' and it's meaning as the female genitals quite a lot in Die Traumdeutung.

doesn't sound even remotely like freud (especially considering the things he had to say about war towards the end of his life) and i'm damn sure it's not from "General Introduction to Psychoanasis."

I did some searching in the "General Introduction to Psychoanalysis" but did not find the quote. Admittedly, I'm not exactly a Freud expert and my googlefu is weak, so I might have searched poorly.

The only mention of "weapons" in that book, though, appears in dreams, and then he's only referring to how weapons tend to represent male genitalia. But upon further reading (I read the surrounding pages where each was mentioned) it was literally just talking about the interpretation of weapons.

Years ago (pre-Internet years), I used to read American gun magazines and saw this quote frequently used to ridicule people who favored gun control.

Now, I'm not suprised to hear Freud most probably never said that.
