Crash Ronnie Lott amputated his finger during game

Comment: Ronnie Lott, Free Safety/Corner Back for the San Fransisco
49ers... widely thought among sports fans that he intentionally cut off
part of his injured finger during a football game so that he could keep
playing... this story goes along with his reputation as being incredibly
tough.

Did it happen?

He had the tip of a pinky amputated after it was crushed, but not during a game, but after the 1985 season ended.

It's pretty common, well more common than in other sports, to have a buggered pinky finger amputated in the AFL, but not during the game.

I can think of 3 guys off the top of my head who have done it or going to do it.
Chad Cornes
Daniel Chick
Brett Blackwell

Knowing some of the injuries afl and rugby players play with, it wouldn't suprise me if medical staff seriously considered lopping off a finger at half time.

I work with disabled athletes, and I can think of several of them who have had fingers amputated after getting them caught in between wheels during contact sports like quad rugby. Never during a game though!
