Postal Story (This is a Great Story)
Random act of kindness.....its what makes the world a beautiful place. Always look for the beauty Our dog Abbey died Aug. 23, and the day after Abbey died, my 4 yr. old, Meredith, was SO upset. She wanted to write a letter to God so that God would recognize Abbey in heaven. She told me what to write, and I did. Then she put 2 pictures of Abbey in the envelope. We addressed it to God in Heaven, put two stamps on it (because, as she said, it could be a long way to heaven). We put our return address on it, and I let her put it in the drop box at the post office that afternoon. She was absolutely sure that letter would get to Heaven, and I wasn't about to disillusion her. So around Labor Day, we took the kids to the museum in Austin , and when we came home, there was a package wrapped in gold on our front porch. It was addressed to Meredith so, she took it inside and opened it. Inside was a book, "When Your Pet Dies" by Mr. Rogers (Fred Rogers). On the front cover was the letter we had written to God, in its envelope (opened). On the opposite page was one of the pictures of Abbey taped on the page. On the back page was the other picture of Abbey, and this handwritten note on pink paper: "Dear Meredith, I know that you will be happy to find out that Abbey arrived safely and soundly in heaven. Having the pictures you sent to me was a big help! I recognized Abbey right away! You know, Meredith, she isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me (just like it stays in your heart) young and running and playing. Abbey loved being your dog, you know. Since we don't need our bodies in Heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep things in-- so I am sending you your beautiful letter back with the pictures--so that you will have this little memory book to keep. One of my angels is taking care of this for me. I hope this little book will help. Thank you for your beautiful letter. Thank your mother for sending it. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. God blesses you every day and remember, I love you very much. By the way, I am in heaven and everywhere there is love. Signed, God, and one of his special angels (who wrote this letter after God told HER the words)." How wonderful is that! I never knew there were angels working at the post office! |

I must admit that I was a little disappointed in the thread title -- I was hoping for a shooting-at-the-workplace ending.

Oh, dear. I don't have anything cynical to say. Further proof that all my braincells fly out the window when dead pets are involved.

Well its not actually glurge is it - its just a story about how someone at the post office decided to do something nice.
Now to make it glurge the following needs to be added: Quote:

Sorry for the huge bump but I just found a slightly different version on Craigslist:
This is one of the kindest things I've ever experienced. I have no way to know who sent it, but there is a kind soul working in the dead letter office of the US postal service. Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words: Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her. Love, Meredith. We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had. Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note: Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by. Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I am wherever there is love. Love, God (picture of girl hugging dog here)

I'm going to go postal if I read one more pointless glurge like this.
Seriously, though...this was kind of sweet. Corny, but sweet. And I like the fact that it entertains the belief that our pets go to heaven. I hear a lot of people say they don't, which is kind of depressing. I can't help but think a heaven without animals would be kind of boring. |

Pets must be in heaven. Why, just the other day, I read that seals are in heaven. It's true! It's in Revelations! There's seven seals in heaven, as a matter of fact!
I'll go sit in the corner and think about what I've done. |

Whether true or not, I don't see what's so sweet about playing what to me sounds like a mean trick on a little girl. This girl believes in a god and a heaven that accepts dogs because she's been told that it's true, which is fair enough. But actually having somebody write her a letter and sign it 'god' is going to mess this girl up right royally! When she's older she's going to realise that something was amiss and that's going to make her more upset about her dog than she would have been without everybody playing a trick on her.
The book was nice, but I think it could have done without the letter! |

I JUST got this today, 2 years later. This is typical of my workplace. Always last on the internet glurge-chain.
Here it is in its latest incarnation, forwarded from a billion people to me, but originally sent to someone on May 19th, 2009 from Mr. Positive.com Quote:
