Heh, my "toilet" book at the moment is "Potty, Fartwell & Knob" compiled by Russell Ash, and MrsHobbit keeps wondering why I'm giggling every time I go to the lav.

Even if those names are made up, they're still not a patch on the real British names from the 1800's.

I had a teacher friend who claims he taught a boy called Wayne Kerr. No, I didn't believe him either.

A distant relation of mine was supposedly called Donald Duck.

A schoolfriend's first serious b/f had the surname "Bates". Unfortunately the lad also had some very traditional elderly maiden aunts who addressed birthday and Christmas cards to "Master Bates" (without even using his initial) and who didn't understand why such cards caused embarrassment (he kept some of the envelopes to amuse friends later on though).

Another pal noted a new joiner to the dept was Ken Wood and asked if the guy was a mixer :o (he meant as opposed to a loner).

I really did have a boss (or a boss's boss's boss) called Michael Hunt and we were instructed that under no circumstances was his name to be shortened to "Mike".

I went to high school with Anita Butt (who later married a guy whose last name was Dick). Her cousin's name was Rose Thorne.

On a radio phone programme a listener rang in and said that his Roman Catholic parish priest was called Christopher Moss. 'That's not unusual,' said the presenter (Danny Baker, by the way).

'It is,' replied the listener, 'he shortened his first name and so he was Father Chris Moss!'

A later contributor claimed that he knew a Mr. and Mrs. Littler who called their son Adolf, but Danny didn't believe that one.

The BBC has a longer article with more examples of unusual names, including some from the USA. The comments section has this contribution:

I worked with an A Butt. He lived up to his name in that he was a total a-hole.

I think the problem is that in an American accent, the name Jenny Taylor is totally innocuous.

Does the "Kendal" part mean anything or is that just her location?

I served in Kuwait back in 2001 with a guy named Mike Hawke. He thought it was hilarious.
