Hello Kitty Cub vs. kid

Comment: In reference to:
Barbara Schoener was killed by an 80-pound female mountain lion on April
23, 1994 in Northern California on the American River Canyon trail.

Question:
Were there funds set up for Barbara's children and for the mountain lion's
cub (kitten), and did the mountain lion's cub fund get more money?

I did some googling and found this, from this link:

Quote:
A classic Limbaugh news-reference involved a mountain-lion attack in Colorado (hyping alleged liberal overconcern for deadly mountain lions is a surprisingly hardy staple of right-wing radio entertainment); Limbaugh wanted to argue that PC-mad animal rights activists had raised more money for the lion cub than had been raised for the victim's family. "As of May 23, the orphaned mountain lion had received $21,000 in donations and Barbara Schoener's two kids had received around $9,000," was how Rush put it, way back in 1994. The story was total bullshit and had been exposed as such for more than a month at the time Rush came out with that story.

Wouldn't that be just as much an example of uncaring conservatives who failed to ensure that the lady's kids were supported as it is an example of crazed animal-rights activists?

I did a little searching and found a reference in Mark Davis' book Ecology of Fear, but don't have access to the book and suspect he might just be reciting an UL.

On a personal side I've lived a long time in the area and it is entirely plausible, and has little to do with liberal vs. conservative, but more about human nature in general. I had a friend who ran a homless shelter in Sonoma County (not too far from American Canyon) who tried for years to raise about $1,000,000 to make a permenant homeless shelter instead of living out a hodge-podge of temporary buildings. One day several years ago the country opened an animal shelter with a $7 Million price tag. My friend was understandably livid.

There are just a lot of people out there that care for animals and that assume, rightly, that we have lots of safety nets in place for people but relatively few for animals.

Please note I'm not saying the OP is true, just making the observation that based on what I saw in the North Bay that this is plausible.

Good point. I don't usuallly give money to the homeless, but I did once, a few months ago, when I saw a homeless woman sitting next to a dog. I just felt really bad for the dog that I made a point of dropping a few dollars in when I came out from my appointment.

I fully admit that i am much much more likely to give to an animal charity then i am to a human one.
