Those of you who watched
All in the Family likely recall the famous episode in which Sammy Davis, Jr. accidentally left his briefcase in Archie's cab, then made a trip to the Bunker household to retrieve it. One of the gags in the episode was that Archie explained to everyone that Sammy Davis, Jr. had a glass eye and admonished them not to say or do anything that would call attention to it -- and then flubbed it himself by offering Davis a cup of coffee and asking, "Do you take cream or sugar in your eye?"
I was just reading the book
Titanic's Last Secrets and came across a very similar anecdote about J.P. Morgan:
Quote:
|
[J.P. Morgan] was afflicted with rhinophyma, a skin disease that had turned his nose into a dreadful, swollen purple knob. Morgan had gone to an afternoon social at the home of a banker and his wife, who had coached their daughter to avoid staring at Morgan's nose when she served the tea. The girl dutifullly brought in the silver service and biscuits and left the room. Her mother, breathing a sigh of relief that the moment had passed, said, "Mr. Morgan, do you take one lump or two in your nose?"
