Comment: I heard that sometimes if a blizzard strikes early in the fall,
the sap in trees can freeze and explode. Is this true? It sounds dang cool. |

Well, water does expand when it freezes, and sap is probably mostly water, so the veins of sap would probably expand during a sudden freeze, and thus might cause the bark of the tree to crack and bulge outward. I can't see it violently exploding, though.
Maybe we should ask the Mythbusters to look at this one. At the very least they would blow a tree up for laughs at the end of the episode, and like the OP said, it would be way cool to watch.
