Icon09 BCS band performance

Comment: I heard that in the 2007 National Championship game against
Florida and then undefeated the Ohio State Buckeyes, the OSU band played
as part of the half-time show the song "My Heart Will Go On" from the
1990's film Titanic, complete with a marching formation of a ship sinking.
Is this true? I find it hard to believe (especailly in light of the
importance of the game and the final score where the Buckeyes were
destroyed) that the band would be that idiotic/brash to do a Titanic
number during the half-time show of the National Championship. Is there
any truth to this?

I think they did a medley that included Titanic but how much of the sinking scene was included is hard to tell from reports alone. (They have done it before, though. Some of the OSU vs. Michigan show is on youtube.)

The show was apparently made of movie themes and included "E.T." and "Star Wars" themes as well. I'm seeing several complaints that the "Titanic" piece was ripped from Michigan's act at the 1999 Citrus Bowl.

Here are some pictures of the OSU band practicing the show before the game. There is video on YouTube, but the site is down right now for maintenance.

I saw Michigan do the Titanic act in 1998 at the Michigan vs Eastern Michigan game*, which would have been the same season as the 1999 Citrus Bowl. Yes, it did feature a sinking ship and it was actually a really cool marching formation. (Basically, the band formed a ship-shape (Hee!) and then rotated about 90° and then they marched toward the sideline. As each person got to the sideline, they marched along the sideline until the "ship" was gone.)

[Shameless Michigan fan]I wouldn't be surprised if OSU stole it. Darn Buckeyes![/Shameless Michigan fan]

Here's a blog report of the 2007 show.

Here's a newspaper that says the band had a Titanic theme, but no mention of the sinking ship.

*I was in the EMU band - we did a Tribute to Gershwin that game. It was better.
