Comment: Is it true that a family member dies when a baby is born? It
seems to be consistant in my family that whenever a baby is born, an elderly family member dies. It's actually gotten to the point where it's expected, and people just say "A life for a life." Does this happen to many other families? |

Gee, if that were true, the world's population wouldn't be increasing, would it?

Not true in my family; my maternal grandmother has 19 grandkids, of which I'm the oldest at 21. There's been exactly two deaths in the family since I was born; my grandpa when I was 4, and my great-grandma a few years ago.

Certainly not true in my family--my maternal grandmother managed to hang on through over 50 grandkids and great-grandkids.
I can see why it might sometimes seem that way in less prolific families, though. Combination of coincidence and roughly corresponding numbers in each generation. Nonny

Why of course it makes sense - Da died, and two whole years later, my hell in a handbasket sister had a baby girl!

And after years of research, we figured out that a guy who died a month after I was born was, like, my mother's fourth cousin.
Weird!

Then the Duggars would have no relatives left. Sorry, that was completely obvious.
In our families it seemed like a bunch of elderly relatives seemed to be hanging on until DH and I got married. I have no idea why. We went to a lot of funerals that first year together. |

If it's true, my parents are going to be immortal. Neither I nor my sisters are having children (we're all in our 40s now).

Or else this family has a family member that offs old folk so that the population doesn't go up.

Indeed - it has already done its damage before it gets to you
