Icon84 Sarah Palin quotes

Comment: THESE ARE VERIFIED QUOTES FROM GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN OVER THE PAST
20+ YEARS (verified from reliable sources and newspapers): "I don't believe
in interracial relationships, I was born in Idaho and raised to believe
that whites and blacks shouldn't mix or date each other" (1986) "I want
creationism as the only theory taught in our schools" (2001) "I don't know
a lot about Iran, I just heard that they are bad people"(2006) "He can say
he is a christian but as far as I'm concerned, Obama is a muslim, look at
his middle name" (2007) "The bible will at some point, be in every
classroom in our great state if I have my way" (2005) "Here in Alaska, we
don't have hardly any black people, I never talk to them, so I was
surprised that a black girl beat me in the 1984 Miss Alaska pageant"
(1988) "Todd and I talked about Hurricane Katrina as God's way of
cleansing New Orleans of the blacks who have sinned, the Bible predicted
it" (2005)

I'm sure I've heard that attributed to someone else.

Pfft, only one Google result for "I don't know a lot about Iran, I just heard that they are bad people" and it seems to be the same collection of quotes with the dates removed.

And besides, why would someone go to the trouble of providing a year, but no source?

ETA: Whoops, my search for 'Palin Quotes' turned up a load of Michael Palin quotes, and it took me a little long to realise.

Oh maybe not then. It does sound familiar.

To show a progression?

Chris Smith, a New Jersey Republican reported says: Put The Bible In Every Classroom though what he said wasn't so direct:
Quote:
Our schools need to become oases of goodness, sound moral teaching and, they must become agents of change in the culture. Our students must find the God of the Bible and Biblical values in the classroom, on the campus. I believe we need to do more to find effective ways to educate and inform policy makers and hold them to account.
.

*Eta, the more I look these up the more they all appear to be paraphrases of something other Republicans said.

The real truth is more depressing; she's never really said anything of note. Unless you count the hockey mom = pitbull in lipstick comment.

Off topic, but my wife and I were with some friends while we were watching her speech. When she delievered that line, I said, "You know, I heard that comparison before, but it went; "What's the difference between a pitbull and a hockey mom? One is a slobbering, smelly, hairy animal and the other is a pitbull."

It got a laugh...

Why put in the line "verified from reliable sources and newspapers" and not give those reliable sources and newspapers?

This could be a question for the stupid questions thread, but does "hockey mom" in that context refer to ice hockey?

Because they're either made up or misattributed, and the originator didn't want anybody to catch on?

I assume so; ice hockey is very popular in Alaska. Does anyone know which of her kids played hockey?

I find it hard to believe that an educated person and a politician like Palin would use this kind of awkward phrasing and bad grammar (not to mention the audacity and banality of some of these statements). More likely, the writer of this message was lazy in quoting the statements, if in fact they were said by anyone.

That is a somewhat tortured paraphrase of a remark by ex-Rep. Richard Baker, R-LA. Baker's real comment, while disgusting, wasn't nearly this offensive: he didn't refer directly to blacks.

One thing in that list that could be fact-checked: did Palin in fact lose Miss Alaska to a black contestant? I doubt it, but that would at least offer a hint as to whether that particular quote is legit.

Yes she did. Scroll down to Miss Alaska of 1984.

If the quote is legit, I would just as soon rather see a source for the quote rather than piecing it together based on whether it could potentially be true. As has been pointed out, the person distributing these quotes claims that they have been "verified from reliable sources and newspapers" and yet no sources are provided. I ran a LexisNexis News search with the fairly broad search criteria of any news article containing the words "Palin" and "pageant" in combination with the phrase "black girl." It returned zero hits.

Do we even have verification that Gov. Palin was even IN the 1984 Miss Alaska contest?

I did a quick Google search to check the year, and as much as I hate to cite to Us Magazine... cite.

ETA: Here's a piece from the Washington Post's gossip column, The Reliable Source.

Miss Alaska '84 Recalls Rival's Winning Ways

Oh, yes, indeed, Maryline Blackburn remembers Sarah Palin. From the time she first met her fellow contenders for the title of Miss Alaska 1984, the flute player from Wasilla was one who stood out from the crowd.
