Icon06 Ladies in Black haunt Rudolph Valentino's tomb

After the actor's death in 1926, a veiled woman (or several of them) appeared each year to lay flowers near his tomb. The original mourner may never be identified, but others have taken up her mantle.

The Lady or Woman in Black has often appeared in works of fiction, including TV shows and comic books.

There was a episode of "The Adventures of Superman" back in the '50s where the main villainess was called the "woman in black." She wore a black dress and veil to hide her identity.

Also, in 1969 an issue of "Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane," featured an "imaginary" Lois Lane story where Lois is suddenly blinded and Superman marries her. Later, Superman is supposedly killed in an accident involving Krytonite, and a memorial stone is set up in his memory. Lois visits his memorial every year (or was it every day?) as the "mysterious woman in black." She is of course dressed in a black dress and wears a black veil.

IIRC, a mysterious woman in black visits Edgar Allen Poe's grave every year too.

btw, is there supposed to be a slideshow on the article? The way I read it it was supposed to, but I couldn't figure out where the link was.

You are referring to the Poe Toaster who is normally believed to be male.
