Conventional wisdom, the story books and, at least in Milwaukee, urban legend might lead us believe that Bob Hazle earned the nickname "Hurricane" for the force with which he blew into the major leagues 51 years ago. The misremembered version is that the 1957 Milwaukee Braves found a savior down the stretch in Hazle, who stepped in for injured Billy Bruton and sparked the club to the National League pennant.
Over time, this became one of baseball's "Liberty Valance'' tales (when the legend becomes fact, print the legend).
