It almost qualifies for Snopes spotting as the article includes the line:

State Mammalogist John Young says she captured a grey fox. “When mange goes untreated it causes this type of reaction."

The one you are thinking of was where the rancher SHOT a "chupacabra" and sent samples off for DNA testing...

I ought to move to Texas and wait for a poor, emaciated dog with mange to die on my property. I'd be rich.

Regardless, can anyone point me to how the whole Chupacabra myth originated? I'm relatively certain it started in Mexico, but what in the world is the story behind it?

I got a picture of it, or a very similar beast, a few weeks ago. The one I saw had short fur and was extremely thin but was definately a coyote.
