So...Pedro can't speak English, but going to summer school for high school English, he's going to be able to speak English and go on to college? Color me doubtful...

I would find it impressive if *anyone* could learn to be fluent in a language after being taught for only 2/3 months.

If Jeffrey is given a good paddling, there's no way he'll be able to sit still. He'll be standing up for the rest of the day.

Why are you two assuming that the reason Pedro failed English was that he doesn't speak or isn't fluent in English?

Because of his name, I guessed that's what they were trying to imply. It isn't a "kids are given a free ride in class" thing, it was a "TEH EBIL EMEGRANTS!" thing.

Well, back in '73 we would... and we would be glad.....

I can't believe they've now "updated" the ol' "When I was a kid...." thing to "my" generation. I feel old.

I work with a Czech guy who learnt English quite well in about 3 months. Not in classes, just in a big workplace.

He probably had no one around that spoke Czech. It's easier to learn a language if no one talks to you in your first language. Unless Pedro's parents stop speaking to him in Spanish, it will be harder for him.

Actually having another language spoken in the house has little to no effect on a child's ability to learn the dominant language of a culture. This is why children of immigrants often act as translators for their parents.

A child growing up in a foreign country will learn to speak the language presnted to them on television, and in the surrounding community, only if the child is living in an exclusivly ethnic enclave, or is a recent immigrant himself (a possibility for pedro, in wich case however he would be taking easl classes in addition to his normal classes in most districts) would his parent's native language pose a major hurdle for Pedro.

In truth, pressuming the child had spoken english well enough to get into an american highschool, it seems unlikely that his needing to take a summer school course would have been for anything other than minor grammar issues, and not actual language issues.

If his problem could be solved in summer school, he probably spooke english no worse than most americans. If he couldn't speak the language at all, english wouldn't have been his only class he needed summer school for.

1973 - President's advisors commit perjury to cover up an illegal act

2006 - Vice President's advisors commit perjury to cover up an illegal act

See how much better things have gotten?

ETA: Why 1973? Why not, say, 1976? It's more symmetrical

Really? I find this highly unlikely.

Me, too. I was in grammar school in 1973, and neither teachers nor principals were not allowed to 'paddle' students then.

ETA: Or do you find it unlikely that he was able to sit (still or not) in class after the incident?

I was at primary school in 1973 and misbehaving kids were sent to the headmaster to be smacked with the slipper.

Just clarifying: you saying they were not allowed to paddle students back then?

I was in high school in the 80s, and they still paddled students. Not common, but it happened.

ETA: already spanked by others

I was paddled. In public school. My parents signed a consent form at the beginning of the year.

I graduated in 1999.

1985 - Jeffrey can't be still in class & falls behind in his work -- Parents notified of his struggles & class disruptions & it is left up to them how to handle it or he will repeat the grade or moved to BD.

God forbid we take responsibility & beat the crap out of our own kids. C'mon 1973 parents -- grow a pair.

Jeffrey

Really now? Some school boards in Canada, Ontario, and even the GTA and Golden Horseshoe, still had corporal punishment in elementary schools as late as 1983/4.
