Comment: I just read the artitle entitled OLD SCHOOL DAYS. This is my
first visit to your site, and I confess to being disappointed in this
article, as its premise is entirely false, and the implications it
attempts to make are false. The premise is that the 1940s report on
school discipline problems citing gum-chewing, littering, and making noise
in class as being the most worrisome problems then faced by educators as
being not true, then it goes on to show that this is simply someone's
opinion and strongly implies that, as such, it therefore holds no truth.
There is a difference in saying that these were the MOST worrisome
problems educators faced in the 1940s. That would probably not be
true--likely they were more concerned about preparing the young men before
them to go out to war to fight Hitler! To say, however, that these were
the most PREVALENT day-to-day problems in the classrooms WOULD be
true--and that is exactly the point the man who originally made this
statement meant! The most PREVALENT (as well as worrisome)problems
educators face today is well-known to all of us living in the 21st
century, and they are a million miles away from the most prevalent,
day-to-day issues a high school principal or teacher dealt with in that
time period. All someone would have to do to get your documented evidence
is interview even 100 random people from different parts of the country
who were in high school during that time period and ask them what
school-life was like for them and write down the specifics. Was it
commonplace to walk to classes and pass students in the hallways kissing
passionately and even groping each other? Did the thought ever even enter
their minds that one of my fellow-students may blow up the school today?
Or that someone may bring a gun to school that day and blow them all to
bits as they sit in Algebra class? Were lockdowns a regular part of
school life? Worry over STDS? I could literally go on and on and on.
Better yet, interview 100 random teens from all over America today and ask
them first what their daily concerns are--what highschool in 2008 is
really like-- THEN compare the specifics they give to those octogenarians
when you interview them. There are the facts. Just because no research
group has done this--or so the article's author implies--and written it
down for everyone to read makes no difference whatsoever because those
people who lived in that time period are still alive and kicking--many of
them--and they can testify to the facts with their own mouths. The
Reverend Billy Graham is one of them. He KNOWS that is how schools were
back then BECAUSE HE LIVED THROUGH THAT ERA. The author of the article
seems to want desperately to believe that there wasn't an actual more
idyllic time period--but the truth is, THERE WAS! Was it that there were
no problems whatsoever? Of course not, but compared to what is before
every one of us everyday in today's world, it actually almost seems so.
The contrast...its reality--is so stark. I was born in 1950, and I can
honestly testify that my life back then --and that of the dozen or so kids
in my neighborhood--was no different than that of Beaver Cleaver! Those
much younger than I may have trouble believing that, and try to write it
off as though things were really no different, we have simply romanticized
the past until we actually believe it. Did everyone from my generation and
before have this kind of life? No, of course not! But they were the

Of course, my father was raised on the campus of Bob Jones University which is hardly representative of the mass experience. Oddly enough, when he was growing up, Dorothy Allison was doing so as well, only a few miles away from him. Out of the two, I'd say Allison had the more common experience.

Or that, in my mother's case, viewed the oppressed as agents of their own oppression or even as being pre-ordained to be oppressed (i.e. the natural order argument). Not to mention, so many things were held as "only in the family" that true stories almost never escaped if they were ever even told.
