Icon09 Girl Talk

Since the last girl talk threads were about makeup and underwear specifically, I thought it was time for a more general thread.

I was wondering if anyone knew if there were any wash-in products out there that would slightly darken brown hair? I'm already a brunette but my hair is sort of a boring medium-dark brown, and I was wondering if there was anything I could use to darken it a touch without dealing with proper hair dying? I know they offer those "brilliant brunette" shampoos and conditioners, but I wasn't sure what they actually did, if anything?

Also, does anyone have any good recommendations for a long-lasting red lipstick that doesn't dry out the lips too much?

I've recently come to the realization that I find girls who have dark brown hair and wear red lipstick completely adorable, and I realized, why the heck can't *I* be adorable too? So I thought I might try it out.

There are shampoos and conditioners that have dye added. I use these to help keep my dyed hair looking redder longer, but perhaps it would work to add a bit of color. I don't remember the product names right now, but I can tell you when I get home. The first kind I had could only be bought from a beautician (my friend has a license), but the second kind I got from a beauty supply store. There were types for red, blond, and brown.

The only caveat is that they'll stain the tub if you're not careful. Which I wasn't, and now my tub has pink stains.

I use temporary hair colors to color my hair. They usually wash out in around a month or so on me. I usually do either a chestnut brown, or a dark red. My hair feels healthier and looks shinier after I do them too!
I'm not too big on lipstick because it just seems to need touching up too much and I'm not real crazy about makeup in general. I prefer lip glosses with a little shimmer.

Like bthyb, I used shampoo and conditioner that darkened my hair. I have naturally dark brown (almost black hair), but when I had fire engine red hair and dyed it back to dark brown I used this stuff. It kept my hair dark and spared me from having to re-dye it. It is called Aveda Black Malva shampoo and conditioner.

As for red lipstick, I have no ideas..I loved to wear red lipstick but it dried out my lips too.

I love M.A.C, mainly because they're one of the few department store brands that cater to most skin tones.

If that's too much, I have a nice deep red by Prestige, but I don't know if you have that brand over there.

As for shampoo, I have seen a brunette one that adds colour when you wash with it, but I can't remember the brand!

My favourite red is Red Drama, by Clinique.

If you have a Lush near you and don't mind the prices they have a henna and rosemary shampoo that adds colour and shine to dark hair.

For long lasting matte red lipstick, I like to just use red lip pencil and fill in my whole lip. It lasts a really long time and isn't too drying (you can put a little gloss or lip balm over). I use Sephora brand which I believe is $4-$8. Any matte lipstick will last longer than gloss.

Nice & Easy has a color glaze that takes about 5-10 minutes (I have used this between full colorings, with pretty good success.) or something called Shine Happy (which I have not used) for color boosting.

"Russian Red" and "Ruby Woo" by MAC are both very longlasting bright red matte lipsticks. Highly glamorous. I can't promise thaat they won't dry your lips out because the opinions on makeupalley appear divided on this point. I'm prone to dry lips myself and never had problems wearing "Ruby Woo" but YMMV.

Can anyone recommend a tea tree shampoo? My stylist says it should help with my dry scalp, without ruining my color. (regular dandruff or dermititis shampoos strip the color from my hair)

I normally buy shampoo from the drug store, and I didn't see anything that said tea tree oil when I looked. I'll buy it at a salon if I have to.

Default Shoes!

I just bought two pairs of awesome shoes for $37 so I had to share (okay, brag).

These heels were only $22.

and a pair very similar to these maryjanes were only $15. The are probably Clarks last year version, they don't have the elastic detail woven in the top and heel.

Callie.

Paul Mitchell makes a tea tree shampoo and conditioner. I can't remember if it's sold in drug/grocery stores, but they have it at Trade Secret (and at salons).

As I'm getting older, I've noticed that I am getting a moustache. Or the original one I never noticed is getting darker. My 8 year old just told me the other day that I look like I have a moustache. Very embarassing.

My question is what's the best way to remove/reduce it? I don't know if I want to bleach - we had a consultant who used to bleach hers and it was very noticable. So should I wax? Is it really painful?

I know no one is going to believe me on this, and it has been a couple of years since I have bought it so formulations may have changed, but the very best lipstick I ever found in terms of long-lasting and non-drying is Wet-N-Wild. The 99 cent kind at the drugstore (now around $1.99 I think). That stuff would last all day even through eating and drinking and smoking (I have since quit but when I smoked it still stayed on my lips). Best. Lipstick. Ever.

I did quit buying it however when I could no longer find my favorite shade, and now I have a collection of everything from Clinique, Mary Kay, Avon, MAC, Covergirl...you name it I probably have it...and I still miss my favorite color of Wet-N-Wild.

Waxing and plucking are not really painful and do not cause hair to grow back thicker as many women believe. I would pluck or wax if I had unwanted facial hair.

And with waxing or plucking you don't get the blunt end stubble effect either like you do with shaving (that makes women believe the hair is growing back thicker). For facial hair I think I would go with waxing (unless it was just a few stray hairs then plucking would be easier and quicker).

I have known women who have their upper lips waxed at the salon when they have eyebrows or other services done. I've not done it personally but I have heard that it is not that painful or expensive and they have been happy with the result.

I definately didn't want to shave; I'd feel too much like my husband then.

I was leaning towards waxing, but I'm a pain wuss.

Thanks for the input.

By the way, do you think that it's age that's making it get darker? Or was it always dark and I just never noticed it. (please tell me it's age. I don't want to think I've had a moustache for years and never knew it.)

Are there any hair removal products for sensitive skin? Waxing and creams make my upper lip break out.

I wax my eyebrows & upper lip. It doesn't hurt but it does feel odd right at first after its done. I prefer waxing to bleaching because as you mentioned, it can still be noticable after bleaching.
I don't find it to be that painful. I exhale right as she yanks & its not too bad.

I have another hair-related question. My hair is about mid-back length, but I'd really like it to be a bit longer. It's just pretty fine (and quite frizzy at times), and it seems to break before it grows any longer. Recently I've been using the new Herbal Essence shampoo and conditioner that's supposed to help hair grow longer. I do like how it makes my hair feel, and I do seem to have fewer split ends and such, but it hasn't really been growing as far as I can tell. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get hair strong enough to get longer?
