Blow Your Top Giuliani marriage rumor

Comment: Is this true?

Giuliani is married to Judith Nathan; this is his third marriage. He has
two children, Andrew and Caroline, from his second marriage to television
personality Donna Hanover, and one stepdaughter, Whitney, who is Nathan's
daughter. Giuliani's first marriage, to Regina Peruggi, was annulled after
fourteen years, according to Giuliani, because he discovered he and his
wife were second cousins???

If it's not true, someone should tell Giuliani's campaign staff. The paragraph above is taken virtually verbatim from the famous leaked memo regarding some of the challenges RG's campaign will face.

"Grounds for annullment" is not necessarily the same as "reason(s) the marriage ended."

I don't know if it's true or not, but the point is moot. It was reported today that Giuliani said something nice about Ruth Bader Ginsburg, which means a very large bloc of Republican primary voters will swallow poison before they'll vote for him. It seems The Clash had it wrong and Rudy can in fact fail.

And I find it hard to believe that GOP voters would go for a big city mayor and adulterer who used to live with gay men. However:

National Poll: Giuliani 27% McCain 19% Gingrich 13%

I'm not saying polls mean much this early on.

My best case for Giuliani winning the nomination is the law of historical inevitability: 2008 was just meant to be a Democratic year, so the GOP will follow the script and nominate a guy with a proven inability to beat Hilliary Clinton.

An aside: Rudy's first marriage is often referred to as having been "annuled". Was it civilly annulled or only religiously annulled with a civil divorce?

If the annulment was only a religious one, why does the media not refer to him as "twice divorced" instead. Obviously his handlers have decided that if the first marriage was annulled, then voters won't count it against him.

Is discovering a spouse actually a distant relative really grounds to end a fourteen year marriage? I couldn't imagine ending my one year marriage over that.

Those were grounds for the religious annulment, not presumably the real reason why the he and she wanted out.

IMHO, if Clinton or (less likely) Gore is the opposing nominee, this kind of thing will really hurt Giuliani. If Obama is nominated, however, it won't matter, because Obama's history of drug use will be seen as more or less balancing out Giuliani's, uh, complex history with women. Yea, I know this is unfair, because Obama was a teenager and Giuliani's stuff is fairly recent.

I personally would like to see someone elected president this time with a G rated biography. Gore, H. Clinton, Romney and Rice all qualify.

Somebody pointed out to me just last week, re: Romney...among the leading candidates for the GOP nomination, the Mormon is the only one who has only had one wife. Politically incorrect, but amusing!
