Icon27 Alabama senate backs 'urban legend'

The Alabama state Senate may have been locked down for most of the year, but it did find time to endorse a widely discredited urban legend spread by the John Birch Society.

The upper chamber passed a joint resolution April 10 sponsored by state Sen. Rusty Glover, R-Semmes, claiming that Canada, Mexico and the United States are moving toward a "North American Union" and working on construction of a "NAFTA Superhighway" to link the countries and reportedly destroy their sovereignty.

Experts from the White House to snopes.com, a popular urban legend Web site, say no such union is in the offing.

D'oh!

Ugh... not only is this my state, but I think I'm in this twit's district (I just moved outside the Mobile city limits and am close to the unincoporated community of Semmes).

Unfortunatly, the county is much more conservative than the city itself.

ETA: Yep, by about a half mile.... bleagh....

Spit Take Stick to reality, Senators; leave urban legend alone

Let's tick off some of the important issues the Alabama Senate has failed to deal with this session:

-- Reforming the state's outmoded and unworkable constitution.

-- Fixing Alabama's unfair tax code.

-- Protecting the state from a vast international conspiracy to jettison the sovereignty of the United States and give control of the most powerful nation in the world to Canada and Mexico -- a conspiracy so secret that only the John Birch Society has been able to detect it.

Throw Tomato Decisions of our senators

The Alabama Senate does not have (or will not take) the time to pass legislation that will improve the lives of our citizens, but it has the time (or takes the time) to pass a resolution denouncing a movement that does not exist and a highway that no one plans to build.

I sure wish they allowed comments because I am sure they'd be a hoot to read.
