It is an amazing image, I've not got time to examine it properly yet... so I am reserving judgement!

RE the lightning...You get massive discharges in ash clouds, I would be highly sceptical if there were none!

ETA: it looks legit... it is credited to UPI

Phenomenonononononly good photography!

Yow!

Wow, that is unreal! And quite spooky as well. I think I would have been terrified to see that, without even thinking of the distruction that ash clouds create. There's something "other-worldy" about it.

That is incredible. And I agree that there is something other-worldly about it. A stunning picture, but I certainly wouldn't want to be close enough to that thing to take one.

Yow!

Wow! That is so beautiful! I don't think I've ever seen anything like it.

I think I'll stick to looking at them through photos though.

Yup, lightning is pretty much present in all major volcanic eruptions. I can't see the photo on the site you linked Hans - but work is blocking a lot of stuff on there. Bah!!

ETA: the second picture in the slideshow is similar, with even more lightning.

Don't you work at "Headquarters" ?

Ironic that they block you from seeing pictures of volcanoes!

It's jealousy that the USGS gets to do all the cool stuff and we're left with the dregs

I assume that they're long exposures and so capture more lightning than you'd actually see at any given moment if you were there...

According to this page, it's a volcano in Chile.

A volcano makes much more sense with all that orange glowing. From the first picture alone, I would have guessed it was a tornado, but it looked very column-like rather than funnel-like. Plus, I don't know if they get tornadoes in Chile. And how are we supposed to know from a picture of smoke and lightning what country it happened in?
