Comment: I have been listening to sports radio in Birmingham, Alabama and
a caller called in and stated that there was an Auburn University flag on the moon. Is there any truth to that? |

I've never heard of this, though I have heard about John Young's corned beef sandwich smuggled aboard Gemini 3.
If the implication is that one of the twelve Apollo moonwalkers brought an Auburn flag with them, I'm not sure why they would. None of them attended that school. For the record, the Apollo schools are: Purdue (Armstrong, Cernan) USC (Armstrong) West Point (Aldrin, Scott) MIT (Aldrin, Mitchell, Scott, Duke) Princeton (Conrad) UT Austin (Bean) Annapolis (Shepard, Duke) Carnegie Institute of Technology (Mitchell) Michigan (Irwin) Georgia Institute of Technology (Young) CalTech (Schmitt) Harvard (Schmitt) EDITED TO ADD: Aha! The plot thickens. Apollo 16 Command Module Pilot Ken Mattingly did indeed attend Auburn. Perhaps his crewmates carried a memento for him. Last edited by Grumpy; 26 April 2008 at 10:46 PM. |
