Today's "from the archives" reminded me of something I heard a number of years back. I'm sure it is not true, but just wanted to share it with everyone else.
After leaving TV for a film career, Tom Hanks sky rocketed to fame fortune and success. However he was always a little embarrassed by his beginnings in TV land. so, he bought the rights to the sitcom "Bosom Buddies" so that he can keep the episodes off the air. Now, as I said, I'm sure this if false, but it is odd that you never see that show in syndication. At least not around where I live. Just a little tidbit that has been stuck in my brain for ages...and now you will never unknow it either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure that I remember watching episodes of Bosom Buddies on television after Tom Hanks had become fairly well-known after starring in "Big". I used to love that show, but to be fair, I was a child at the time.
Whatever happened to Peter Scolari?

Bosom Buddies was a good (not great) show that rose above its goofy premise and name.
I thought I read somewhere that Hanks had bought the rights with the intention of someday producing a movie version. Can't find a cite now, of course, and even if he said it he may not have been serious. |

Peter Scolari has been doing alot actually according to IMDB. Nothing huge, but steady. Of course he really did seem to catch the short end of the stick on the deal. I loved Bosom Buddies, but have a hard time even remembering Peter Scolari by name....

When I was a kid I had such a major crush on Peter Scolari from watching Newhart. I just checked his imdb page and it seems he's remained quite active since then. Good for him, he's likeable.
And I recall watching Bosom Buddies late at night on TVLand as well. *Spanked! And sadly, not by Peter Scolari. Last edited by candy from strangers; 11 April 2008 at 02:57 PM. Reason: to acknowledge my spanking |

I loved that show, but can only remember one line from its entire run.

Every time I hear "My Life" by Billy Joel I think of the show. I remember watching it as a child too. It's on DVD? I"ll have to put it on my NETFLIX.

Sadly, some discussion on snopes about bosom buddies led me to the imdb page of Wendie Jo Sperber....actually I think the discussion was about "Babes" that Fox sitcom she was on...and I found out that she died fairly young of cancer, and Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari both spoke at her funeral.

I was not aware it had been released on DVD. *bangs head* Research!!!!!!!
But, as I said, I did not beleive it, but found the UL interesting. It is one of my earliest memories of a UL. Before I had any idea that anything could be not true if I heard it somewhere.......

I don't see it's anything to be embarassed about, especially from someone who did The Money Pit.
The show was critically trashed, mostly because of its first episode, which made it look like a T&A comedy. It used that for the pilot, but stopped afterwards and even dropped the entire crossdressing premise the second season. Not a great show, but a solid B+ sitcom. |

In addition to all that's been mentioned, ISTR seeing his name in the credits for The Polar Express. So in addition to him still doing okay, apparently he and Tom Hanks are still on friendly terms.
Not that that will stop me from thinking of him as the Andrew Ridgeley of Hollywood... |

I absolutely loved that show. It was the definition of camp. Not good, but thoroughly enjoyable because the people doing it seem to be having a great time. I mean it was silly, but no one ever tried to pretend it wasn't, unlike a lot of really stupid shows that take themselves awfully seriously, and even produce those "very special" episodes. (I'm thinking of Full House, but there are lots of others.)
I saw Tom Hanks in an interview with, IIRC, David Letterman, about four years after BB ended. He seemed acutely embarrassed when Letterman mentioned the show, and never referred to it by name-- only as "that show I did several years ago." But that was when he was on the rise, though his position wasn't secure. It was before Philadelphia-- it may have been around the time Big came out, but it also might have been even before that, when most of his movies were The Money Pit, or Volunteers. He was getting a lot of high profile work, but it wasn't all high quality. Now that he is a firmly established star, and BB is more than 20 years ago, he seems less embarrassed by it. |

You need about 100 episodes to make it viable in syndication. Bosom Buddies only had 2 seasons of 37.
I think Bachelor Party was much more embarrassing than Bosom Buddies, but then again they are doing a straight to DVD sequel. |
