They come up time and time again, those seemingly “credible” newsy bits about sex that consumer magazines love to regurgitate. Many have been around for so long that they’ve become the standard “truth” by which we view the sexes and sexual response.

But they’re simply not the facts.

I'm mostly posting this because it seems to be a fairly accurate bit of reporting from Fox News.

They're not just myths you shouldn't believe, but false myths you shouldn't believe because they're untrue.

So presumably a FOXSexpert is an expert in fox sex? Or having sex with foxes (with or without mange? )? Either way, I'm not so sure about taking hir advice now.

I would say number 2 is commonly believed. Number 4, not so much now, but at the time I was born in certainly was.

Number 7 I had at least heard before -- actually it was a letter, to the Playboy adviser or some similar column, from a woman who had been told it by a guy she was sleeping with: "Don't worry about getting pregnant, I just won't let you come and you'll be fine." She wanted to know if it was true. The columnist explained that not only was the guy wrong (or lying), but a selfish A-hole to boot.

I would say number 3 is at least somewhat believed -- or at least that multiple male orgasms are rare and most guys can't manage it. (Then again I would expect there are actually a fair number of women who haven't managed it yet, either.)

My favorite in the "huh?" category is number 5. Who believes that? Kind of a cute notion, though, since it presumably would be seen as a "love test." So all the snopestresses who have said they only experience orgasm when masturbating clearly are narcissists, and don't love their mates, right?

Number 2 (about women not being as visually stimulated as men) may not be true, but speaking for myself, it is not my preferred source of erotic stimulation, which may be the reason behind the myth. Most men I have known, on the other hand, it is their preferred source.

And, I refuse to believe #8 is a myth. Yeah, they don't have to be treated like glass, but that skin is delicate and the area is filled with nerve endings. I'm not going to start playing rough with it just because FOX says so. If the owner says so, maybe I'll reconsider.

If this were true, China would never have had a "one child" policy, the word "overpopulation" would not be in the dictionary, "teen sex" would not be defined as problematic, medical insurance would pay for "orgasm therapy" for women, and men might actually care about their partners' orgasms.

Number 2 is the only one I've ever heard repeated frequently, but that's usually by Christian fundamentalists as justification for why women should dress modestly.

How would anyone who'd ever had sex with a man not realize that their nipples can be sensitive? Seems pretty damn obvious to me.

4. Studies have show that circumcised men have lower rates of penile cancer among other benefits. The real debate is whether the benefits outweigh the costs, risks and other issues related to circumcision.

Can't remember the name of the book, but this was part of the backstory of a character in a novel I read. The idea is that since it's necessary for a male to ejaculate (including an orgasm, usually), the same has to happen with the woman.

Well into the early-modern period, the assumption stood firm that woman's well-timed orgasm was necessary to conception. Patricia Crawford has argued that, in early-modern England, this belief had both good and bad implications for women. On the one hand, men who wanted heirs would have worked harder for their partners' satisfaction. But ‘if a rape were followed by pregnancy, the law deemed it no rape because the woman had, by definition, enjoyed the encounter.’

Well, as it says, everyone is different, but in general I would agree with the article that it's a myth.

Ditto. In my experience, there's not a whole lot you can do wrong with the twig. It's those two berries that have to be handled very very carefully.
