Default Marble in car door as revenge on ex

I saw this story about getting revenge on cheating SOs, and it includes a claim by Christine Gallagher, founder of RevengeLady.com and author of a book about revenge, that she put a marble in the car door of her ex's Audi along with a nasty note.

I thought that sounded familiar, and sure enough snopes covers a variation here. So is she making it up I wonder, or did she get the idea from the legend? She doesn't credit the legend, as far as I know.

I don't think you would need to get the idea from the legend. When my brother got married, the guys who decorated the newlyweds' car decided that rocks in the hubcaps would add to the rattle of the cans tied to strings. Shortly after the wedding, my brother complained to an uncle (who had been in on the decorating) about a funny rattle in the car, and the uncle then mentioned the rocks. It is not hard to believe that someone else would come up with this entirely on their own, without having heard the legend. It is not rocket surgery, after all.

Well that's true, but it has some similar elements that make me suspicious. In the case of your uncle, it was done as part of an overall joke, and he readily explained it when asked. In this woman's version, it matches the original legend as part of a revenge scenario and then there's the inclusion of the note once the item is found.

In both hers and the legend's stories, the owner of the vehicle takes the car to a mechanic over and over and presumably incurs great expense. When the object is found, the note conveys contempt for the owner (i.e. calling him an "s.o.b." or "f****r"). How would she know for sure what happened after she planted the marble? I realize there's lots of possible explanations, but my snopes' sense is tingling.
