Shifty Eyes Playgirl's readership mostly male

Quote:
The magazine still draws a large readership, but who's paying money for seeing male frontal nudity? Well, the figures are controversial, but singer Peter Steele expressed regret over his decision to pose for a Playgirl centerfold after he was told that only 23% of Playgirl's readership was female.

While the actual percentage of Playgirl's gay readership varies depending upon whom you ask, from the moment of the magazine's inception, there were whispered rumors that the publication was only masquerading as a woman's rag, and was really an undercover gay men's guilty pleasure.

It's on the gay agenda.

We very seldom see women buying Playgirl in the store. Almost always men. I guess it's slightly less embarrassing than buying the other male nudity centered magazines we carry.

Well obviously they're buying them for their girlfriend, their kinky girlfriend who likes porn.

bask in the amazingness of his kinky girlfriend having self.

I knew one closeteer who bought tampons and a box of choclates along with the playgirl. As camoflauge

They can always claim they're picking up a copy for their wife/girlfriend/as a prank... an openly gay man's magazine I suppose they could say it's a prank, but I doubt anyone would even pretend to believe them.

Heh, spanked by qualli!

If a man brought me chocolates, tampons and Playgirl, I'd keep him. Even if he was gay.

I can attest to the fact that gay men can actually make pretty good boyfriends. The ones in Narnia*, anyway.

I thought about this when I actually saw an advertisement for "Boys Gone Wild" on late night comedy central. They were like ladies get ready for the wildest college guys you've ever seen!!! I thought that, no women are going to buy this crap. Just gay men.

No kidding. If he's going to care about who the magazine's audience is, he really ought to have done a little research into it before posing.

I've thought the same thing.

And Playgirl is far from the for-women version of Playboy--P'girl is full of really, really, *really* truly god-awful writing, unlike P'boy, which does actually have some good articles (or did the last time I read one, which was admittedly a long time ago).

I saw a girl on the bus who had a messenger bag with: "PLANS FOR RADICAL HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA" stenciled on the side. I giggled all the way to school.

I sometimes buy Playboy. Just for the articles, of course.

Many women I know admit to having looked at Playgirl at some point out of curiosity, and finding it pretty tame and boring. I've had them tell me that if you want to see really hot pictures of men, you go to the magazines that are openly aimed at gay men.

I wonder how many lesbians buy Playboy -- or at least sneak looks at it when they find a copy at their brother's apartment? Just for the articles, I'm sure.

Playgirl made a big publicity splash when they had their first issue with Burt Reynolds as the centerfold, but I think that was pretty much the only time it was actually relevant. I'm somewhat surprised it's even still in business.
