Saw it on Pizdaus.com. I don't know if it's real, but if it is, I think we may be looking at the future Darwin award winners

My guess: Staged and not plugged in.

I suppose people really could be that stupid. ("Hey, when we went to Beaches Jamaica last year they had a bar you could swim right up to!")

Would the circuit breaker trip on the surge protector before they fried?

A circuit breaker or fuse trip on over current. That is either overload or short circuit. Surge protectors don't "trip" but shunt over voltages to ground to protect equipment. A circuit breaker or fuse probably won't see enough current to trip before it electrocutes the people. (Assuming it acutually would) But a 'ground fault circuit interrupter' would. It is designed to trip when ever the current is going where it isn't supposed to go.
Richard the electrical engneer.

BTW, I would like to point out that these are not North America idiots. The plug and receptacles are European.

Maybe, depends on what type of breaker it is. A standard breaker wouldn't trip fast enough to protect the drunks in the pool. A ground fault interuptor (GFI) is supposed to work fast enough. If the plug strip has a ground lug then the GFI should work OK. If the plug strip doesn't have a ground wire, and the plastic pool is well enough insulated from ground, then a GFI might not work.

What they should have had is a little inflatable boat to put the extension cord in.

I saw this posted on another site. They found a link to the root folder showing the guys setting up the picture.

http://www.linuxno.de/_data/gallery/nwl7/

Now I haven't been through all the pics, most of the just seem like a bunch of guys messing about with a pool. Though the majority of the pics there have nothing at all to do with the pic here. i found a few of them in this pool in amongst the ones starting "medium"

Maybe someone with a bit (read: LOT) more patience than me could go through the pics and see if they can find anything that screams set up.

So it's in Germany, outside the Northwood-LAN Frag Arena...

There are quite a few showing them setting up the parts you can see, from about

http://www.linuxno.de/_data/gallery/...m_DSCN7807.JPG

onwards; here's another with the whole thing:

That one seems to be the last with it all set up like that. None of those show what the other end of the wire is plugged into, and it's quite a long way from the buildings; they do seem to be pretending to use the barbecue.

Although...

That would suggest it wasn't plugged in, surely!

(eta) You can see the red wire in this one - it could be long enough to reach the buildings I suppose.

I can't see a website for the place itself to ask them about it!

If you look at this page: http://www.linuxno.de/gallery_nwl7.php you'll see a gallery of pictures, which include the precarious pool pics.

If you click on "Impressum" towards the top of the page, the site will go to http://www.linuxno.de/impressum.php and there is some contact information there.

Mythbusters did an experiment involving throwing a hairdryer into a tub of water. The fuse in the hair dryer and then the fuse on the wall outlet (mandatory for bathroom outlets) popped before the instrument could register anything.

I'd say it is possible, but I wouldn't try it.
